A friend has loaned me his 521 complete system for a couple of months. System includes 2 Emotiva amps ,analog crossovers and speakers and all connectors/cables. Only issue is I have is no sound )-: . Crossovers have both red and green LED's lit -is this normal? Have tried two different pre-amps -so some sort of weird pre-amp failure is ruled out ? Secret handshake ? Hidden mute function ? Moon phase ?
Is the crossover the one shown on this page: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...4-linkwitz-lab-asp.4-analog-signal-processor/ ?
Yup -the Madisound unit is it -actually two of them -one for left channel -one for right. I wonder if it was hooked up thru balanced input -owner has a Bryston preamp which does have balanced outputs -will try that next from the balanced outs of the benchmark DAC3
That might be the issue, then. According to Madisound, the unit is set up for either balanced or unbalanced when purchased.
If that doesn't fix it, it might be worth trying the Linkwitz users forum: https://oplug-support.org/index.php

Not sure if this is WTF ??? or just plain DUHHH! -but finally figured it out. The 521's owner hadn't put the caps on the Speakon connectors and I finally remembered that Speakon connectors push-twist and click. Without caps/covers on -ya don't get the click-but all i had to do was rotate them into position and magically -I've got music. No excuse for this -I've added Speakons to bar systems -but always put the caps on -and that was enough to throw me. Usually I just repeat some dumb mistake from my library of errors -this was at least a new bo-bo )-: .
Further adventures: EMOTIVA amps kept going into protect mode ? Sometimes I'd get a hour or two of listening -but especially the left channel amp would shut down. Lovely intermittent problem -oh joy! As usual started at the wrong end of the problem : Tried a Benchmark DAC-3 a NAD 1300 and a Parasound preamp- sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Changed input cables to the Xovers. Nah. Disconnected everything in and out from the xPA-5 and it was just fine -left it on for hours -nice blue light-no protection issues. Hooked speakers up -amp is perfectly happy.Turned amp off-waited awhile for the PS caps to discharge -one at a time restored -cables from Xover to amp -bingo -when one cable was plugged in -amp would go into protection mode. Noticed the fit on the interconnect was sorta sloppy -substituted a old Levinson interconnect with tight nickel plated plugs -now it worked. Got a couple on nice evenings out of that -then protection would randomly kickin. This time I substituted tight fitting RCA cables for the remaining four -left that amp on for 24 hours -no protection mode 🙂. Have had two evenings listening to Lp's thru the 521 system - a real pleasure. I really do hate , loath and despise the RCA connector. BTW -the cables I replaced were all Monoprice brand - I think the ground /shields have simply stretched . If anyone is familiar with the Emotiva XPA-5 amp-why would a input fault on one channel shut the whole amp down ?
