Stretchneck needs more than 1A output current....
Thanks - I’ve rechecked the JCAT Femto USB spec and it only needs 5v 1A. So this might work be a great suggestion!
Ok these work OK too:
Low Noise LT3042 Linear Regulator Power Supply Board For Amanero XMOS DAC Power | eBay
Cheap, low noise but not short circuit proof. They work Ok with a 7V transformer like the toroid series Talema produces. They have 1.5V dropout because of the PNP pass transistor.

A bit I left out in my initial post was that the 78S05 feeds a pair of 2.7V, 360F ultracaps (or supercaps). I'm depending on the caps to take care of any noise from the 78S05 stage.
If I can get away with less than 2A (I think I can but need to measure), then I may try a lower noise reg and see if it makes a difference.
I've started to use PS's based on these huge caps so I can get away with using a simple regulator, vs a superreg.
A drawback to these caps is you have to worry about heat and current draw while charging the caps up. I mounted my 78S05 on a decent size heat sink, and was using a fan to blow air on the heatsink while the cap charged.

Hi Folks,
I'm new to electronics and reading about voltage regulators but didn't find much. I came across this article An Overview on Voltage Regulators - DERF Electronics but this is too confusing for newbies. Can anyone suggest me any online resource where I can get detailed explanation.
