Can anyone recommend a good text book on the design of linear power supplies? I searched on Amazon and most of the texts are concentrated on SMPS, in which I am not interested.
Thanks,
George

There probably aren"t any books about designing Linear Power supplies because there probably isn"t enough info to fill a book .... Unless you are doing something really esoteric there really isn"t a lot too it ......
Most linear power supplies probably don"t have more than a dozzen components , a Transformer , Diode Bridge , Filter Capacitors , Regulators ,Maybe a CRC filter or a CLC filter......
Download PSUD2 , it is a Power supply simulation program which lets to test different Power supply configurations and will help you design a PSU suitable for whatever you purpose is .....
PSUD2
Cheers

Unregulated Power Supply Design
If you add a regulator, just be sure to size the smoothing capacitors vs the max load current so that the regulator's Vin minus Vout can't dip too near the regulator's dropout voltage spec, even at the ripple voltage's minima/troughs, and with worst-case line voltage and transformer performance.
For something LIKE a textbook on power supply design, go to national.com and linear.com (among others) and look through their Application Notes and other technical literature sections.

I second the recommendation for reading the linear tech App notes, they are superb and probably the most complete that i have seen for any technology
Aside from the older power supply books by Irving Gottlieb (TAB books), and the smallish 'Building Power Supplies' by David Lines (Radio Shack), here's a few things you can find online:
Power Supply Design Basics by P. Antoniazzi, SGS-Thomson unnumbered app note
Design Guide for Rectifier Use by Hammond Mfg.
Linear Regulators: Theory of Operation and Compensation by Chester Simpson, NatSemi app note 1148
