SY, I tried to read that book. The first few pages were OK, then my eyes just glazed over.
Seems like I need to learn a whole lot of stuff I don't care to know, just to find out a few things I do want to know. I have neither the time nor aptitude to do so.
Glad I chose to sample the PDF first.

It may be worse than that. You may need to learn a lot of stuff in order to understand what it is you want to know. Without that, you can ask a question and we can give an answer but no useful information will have been transferred.cogitech said:Seems like I need to learn a whole lot of stuff I don't care to know, just to find out a few things I do want to know. Life/the universe/everything is like that. In order to understand the answer, first you have to understand the question.
I would suggest that you persevere. Don't expect to become an audio expert in an hour. It has taken me 45 years of electronics to get to my current understanding, and I am still learning.
cogitech: check out Bruce Rosenblit's "beginner's guide to tube audio design" I found it to be more basic than Morgan's book as far as getting your feet wet. It covers lots of basics, and IIRC it has lots of examples that use the 12AU7.

Thanks for the tip, boywonder.
DF96, I appreciate the encouragement, however I think you may be overestimating my ability and my desire. Statistically, I only have about 30 years left and there are many other things I hope to achieve which take precedence over becoming an audio expert.
I will give Mr. Rosenblit's book a try and if that also overwhelms me, then I will stick to minor amp tweaks like cap swapping, tube rolling, upgrading transformers, etc.

On second thought, I think I might begin with "Teach yourself electricity and electronics" - Gibilisco, S.
Yes, give it a try. Then you might discover why cap swapping and tube rolling are rarely necessary, so you can save your money for buying music.cogitech said:I will give Mr. Rosenblit's book a try and if that also overwhelms me, then I will stick to minor amp tweaks like cap swapping, tube rolling, upgrading transformers, etc.

🙂
I don't get the impression that many people change caps and/or tubes out of necessity, but I did not miss your point about there being better ways to spend one's money.
Thank you!
