Well, like I said, its mostly irrelevant in this case, especially sinse the original poster (off1) now wants to build this preamp circuit into a tube amp!

It never ceases to amaze me at how many people will try to make something simple, into a complicated issue!

Just for arguments sake, I built this preamp, connected it to my solid state amplifier, and what do you know, NO THUMP at turn on!
Believe it or not, that .1 200V cap blocks any thump or turn-on transients.

Oh, by the way, since the preamp is going to be built inside the same chasis as the power amp, they will be sharing the same on/off switch... so I won't worry about any pops.

But thank you all for your insights. I'm really learning a lot for future projects.
 
I built this preamp for my son and he seems to like it. I just need to build it into some kind of box. He will be using it on an old Sears Silvertone tube amplifier. I can't tell you how it breaks up and all of that as I don't play the guitar, but I am going to let him play with it for a while, and I'll get his input. After I build something, I usually don't tweak it with different caps and such, but as long as it works, he's happy. I am temporarily using an adjustable regulated power supply to power it until I can find something more permanent.
