I own a Sony MD Walkman....This device does not have a line out port...but as advised by the retailer's technician I bought a RCA mini cable and have connected it to my external stereo system via the headphones socket. CAN THIS DAMAGE MY WALKMAN DUE TO THINGS LIKE IMPEDANCE MATCHING ETC.....Higher models of this device have an exclusive Line Out !!!....I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY !! IF WE CAN DO THE SAME THING ON MY DEVICE VIA THE HEADPHONES SOCKET....
SOMEONE PLEASE GUIDE.....

I have done this several times and I have not seen any equipment damaged by it. My understanding is, the impedances are slightly different, and there is supposed to be an audible benefit by going through a Line Out port.
The headphone jack is usable as a Line Out jack. The more expensive models have both for supposedly superior sound. Again, I did not find the difference audible between the Line Out jack and headphone jack on a portable machine.

Headphone amps from walkmans and line-out amps amplify to just about the same level most of the time, which is why you can interchange them and have it work well. The difference between the two, if any, is level (louder for high-end amps) and impedance--headphones traditionally offer Z of about 32 ohms; line-level devices are often in the 10k-100k range.
Differences that cause problems occur one of two places: either you have a high-end headphone amp and the level it gives is too loud for the next device in the chain (causing clipping which, AFAIK, will damage speakers at high levels) or, if there is an impedance mismatch, it can increase interference (usually not an issue) or reduce sound levels. I'm sure there are audiophiles out there who actually, um, care about such differences. I suspect many of them enjoy comparing which pictures of them, when frozen, give better sound. (Just kidding, guys.) Seriously though--someone suggest a Zoelbel (sp?) network to go between line-level devices and see how far you get.

You have two differences.
HP out will drive low impedence loads (32 ohm headphones) whereas the line out will load down when driving a HP.
The other difference is that line out is fixed level and HP out is variable level.
When driving a relatively high impedence input (1k-100k) there will be little difference except that HP out maybe a little noisier and some (little) added distortion.
In practical usage the differences are little, so just take your pick.
Eric.

I posted a question about a 5.1 processor earlier and wondered if I could purchase a 5.1 system at wally world and take the outputs from their 5.1 amp and drive my Leach amps.
Carver had a impedance matching device (Z-1). Has anyone built one of these? Are there any problems with doing this?
