Buff-tastic today:

..this is the last time I tackle a project of this magnitude, the work and time needed is testing to say the least.
Thats OK - THIS is the "one".😉
The large expanses of "piano black" contrasting with possibly the best silver finish on a speaker I've ever seen - *exude* sophistication. In particular, the edge definition for your angles with that silver are fantastic - considerably better than the Perceives 2's.
I think this one would make even Neil Patel a little jealous. 😉

Scott I could read your praise all day long. I feel like proud father. 🙂
Finished the top mid/bass cabinet this afternoon:
Don't know what to say really. When I placed that top section on and stepped back, I was lost for words. This will probably be the best looking and most imposing work I ever do. Considering it some more, this is really a once in a lifetime project for a DIY'er. After this I'll put my feet up and retire from these ambitious projects and look towards exploring quick, fun and most importantly, much small things. 🙂
A bit of downer is that whilst inspecting the cabinets I noticed the tweeter box finish is going bad. Hard to explain and even tougher to get a decent photo but its almost as if there's a pattern forming under the lacquer. I'm pretty sure it was because I sprayed it on a moderately cold and overcast day unlike the rest of the parts, which were done on the hottest days that we've had this year. That's the only thing I can think of anyway. I plan to strip and redo it.
EDIT: Resized images to correct size.

Imposing work. The RAAL seems high enough for a relaxed sofa audition. There was some discussion in the past about chosen hight I guess.

What I am seeing in the last pictures, and comparing with ribbons in my speakers similar in size with RAALs, I would say ribbons are in the perfect spot. Compared to the sofa behind they are at perfect head hight. In my speakers ribbons are higher but because of that I had to angle them down. Shin's height is ideal.
Congratulations Shin, this is really project that you should be proud off. I admire your strive for perfection. Regarding big projects, while we are in the midst, we all proclaim them as the last one, but after some time...

Hi AR2
When drawing them up initially I did a CAD scale model against the level my ears are at whilst sitting on my couch. This was the target height of the tweeter axis. However my couch is slightly lower than average but since we're DIY'ing we can do tailor the solution to whatever suits our situation best. Just for reference the height from the floor to the center of the ribbon is 87cm.
Congratulations Shin, this is really project that you should be proud off. I admire your strive for perfection. 🙂
Thanks. 🙂

VERY impressive work, Shin. I can appreciate how much effort went into it. Amazing design. Have you had a chance to listen to it as a complete unit yet? I applaud your talent and skill.
The problem you descibe above (does it look like a "frost" pattern, very uniform?) happened to me once, and I blamed it on the primer coat not being dry enough. After letting it dry for a couple days, i thought I would sand out the pattern and repaint. No, the primer coat was very soft, like the topcoat desolved the prime coat. I had to scrape it all off and start again from the begining.
Of course we use different types of finish, but I'm thinking the same problems possible for both.

Thanks John, appreciated.

That sounds like exactly what I'm seeing, quite fine pattern and only noticeable when focusing your eyes on the paint surface rather the whatever is reflected, you do need to have the right sort of reflection to notice it ie. light dark contrasts show it much more-. It seems to get worse by the day. Running a hand across it doesn't reveal any surface imperfections.
Very unusual, I've never seen this before now. I was planning on just sanding the existing lacquer to give a key for a new coat of base then lacquer but if the problems at the original primer level then thats just going to be a waste of time. If that's the case then methinks it will be quicker to just build another cabinet rather then spend a good while sanding back to the MDF.
Bloody thing!
How are you attaching the baffles to the rest of the cabinet?
Amazing work by the way! Truly inspiring.

The baffle is held in place using screws hidden behind the baffle fascia trim.
BTW Glad you like them.

Wow. I gathered they were going to be that kind of height, but I didn't realise they were that deep. You must have plenty of room to fit them in!

That's just the thing, I don't.
