So you wanna put a normal tonearm on a sled? I guess that'll work.
A straight one, no offset, yes.
Anyone out there who can guide me in the direction of that silent motor/gear combo? I would hate buy 20 different types just to find a correct one.

I suppose you could start with a synchronous clock gearmotor. That might satisfy your 1 RPM requirement right off that bat and get rid of all the electronics except for a zipcord with plug. Silent and the rest of it might take more doing.
A geared motor to drive the sled.
Use a variable frequency to drive the motor.
Use some measurement system, i.e. feedback, to determine if the sled is in the (close enough to) correct position and adjust the drive frequency to bring the sled into a closer to correct position.
