I have been wanting to convert my hd1000 to led since the bulb burned out. I have already bypassed the ballast, and it powers on just fine. I first tried a mr16 halogen light which was much too dim. I then ended up ordering a cree xm-l and driver from dealextreme but my payment was pending for 2 weeks and i got tired of waiting. I have been looking for other souces for drivers but I am having no luck, everything comes from china which takes forever if at all. Does anyone have any recommendations between a xml vs a sst-90? I was also thinking of buying a Luminus csm-360 for both light output, and i could use a laptop psu to power it, so much easier just more expensive, as a last resort.
You can get an XML on eBay. And there's some much larger LED modules; I don't know if those are more suitable.
As for the driver, if you're powering it from a fixed DC voltage, a series resistor may be good enough. It's certainly the simplest and potentially the most reliable driver.
