I've recently acquired a QUAD 33 pre amp , LEAK T 12 power amp+ and LEAK POINT ONE amp ( for (for 550 UK p ounds).
1. Which configuration would you use in this case ?
2. Is the mono sound really different (I mostly listen to Classic and Jazz ).
3. what do you think about a QUAD 240 power amp as compared to my current QUAD 33 ?
4.. any comments on the price ...
Many Xmas greetings

Point one is useless.
LEAK TL12 was rated as quitte nice - but if its like the LEAK Stereo 20 it sounds very syrupy to my taste.
The QUAD 33 is quite a nice sounding bit of kit - but would probably benefit from a bit of a component overhaul.

Power amps from that era are usually very sensitive, so no need for a preamp - just a volume pot.
Mono still sounds like mono on classics and jazz. OK if your sources are mono.

I think the power amps from that era (i have quad 11's) are great and with a refresh can sound suprisingly good. not accurate but very charming. (swapped to my quads for christmas for the warm sound!)
The preamps are not so great, i have the matching 22 preamp but have never used it as they dont have much of a reputation and non of the value of the power amps.

These are collector's items and not meant for serious music listening. Well, maybe once they were, a long time ago... The only Leak worth having is the 12.1 and even that's easily beaten by almost anything diy.
Please help:
- many people tell me that I wii not be able to listen to a modern CD player with those pre - amps because of the volume output of the cd player ? And also, that with my LEAK T12 + and LEAK POINT ONE I'll never get stereo , even if I connect the Quad 33 . So , do you think I should pull out of this 560 UKP deal ?
Thanks for your suggestions ..

This is really quite a poor deal for you. You don't need either preamp with the TL12+, and they are not worth much anyway. All you will have is a single mono amp. As it is, it sounds very dated. The TL12+ would be worth maybe £250 but you have to find another single one with the same paint scheme, and that's not obvious since there were variations in colour. Without a second amp I wouldn't bother unless you are a Leak collector. If you bought a Stereo 20 instead, at least you'd have stereo.
There are reasons to like the TL12+ as long as you are familiar with rebuilding old amps. It has two octal sockets - one for the preamp and one for the rectifier. These could be used for a couple of octal output tubes which would give you a lot more interesting choices of circuit. Or they could be replaced by UX4 or UX5 sockets (e.g. 807 in triode) The remaining four 9-pin sockets could be used for input section and a couple of parallel rectifiers/diodes. I did once modify a couple of TL12+ in this way and they sounded great.

Probably yes. You can do a lot better with a modern integrated stereo amp for £560.00
