Hi everybody - I get I'd better introduce myself briefly - My name's George, born in Zimbabwe, now living in Brisbane, Australia - I have been reading this forum and many like it about this subject. I was really excited to hear about it, but when I started doing some research on parts, I was a little dismayed to find out that we couldn't find any decent LCDs here in Australia. The only ones we could find were from Europe and the States, and therefore nearly twice the price + shipping = too expensive.
I have some good news for people in Australia though - I was wandering past the boardroom at work today, and lo and behold there was a 5.6" LCD on the desk with this guy giving a demo. Now I was excited 🙂 - Anyway it turns out that this guy owns a company in Brisbane and he is looking to distribute these LCDs as automobile entertainment and server monitoring screens. I figure I could use these as a starting point ... I believe that they are basically the same ones as those on Parts Express's website, so I may give them a go.
You can have a look at his website if you're in Australia and hopefully when he works out all the bugs and stuff they'll be worth it. I'll see him again on Friday, so I'll chat with him about them then and let you know. You can find his information here:
http://www.realtime-systems.com/rts-lcd.htm
This isn't an Ad for him by the way, just that I was really excited by this (and the pricing) and even though I normally don't post on forums, I thought this may help some people in this country out.
Thanks alot
George.

Hi
I'm glad to see someone else from australia. i've been reading stuff from the forum and find it very interesting.
you are right that its almost impossible to get lcd panels here in australia. i've decided to get a lcd projection panel from oversea for my project.
the lcd you mentioned might not be good for projection. its resolution are not good enough.
if i remember correctly, DVD has a resolution of 720*480 and most small lcd panel has a vertical resolution of 234.
i might misunderstood something and be wrong.

Yeah I know what you mean, but I can't see me affording a high resolution panel from overseas yet, especially when I don't know how well it will work or if it is worth spending money at all. For my first project, I am not really looking for quality, but just to get the idea and base my proper project on something I have fiddled with, but not spent too much money on if you know what I mean.
I believe from the guy who is selling these that he has had them up to higher resolutions when he has attached them to PCs, so I may try outputting from a PC via TV out or something to that effect. I'm not too sure if it would work too well. He has told me that he is working on all of the interfaces it needs, so I'll keep up to date here when I find out the info.

hi fellow aussies
im in the same boat to,
this sounds like an interesting project for the summer.
i'll be buggerd if i can find a OHP lcd panel in australia anywhere.
the only option is to make one from scratch.
but being a total newbie in this area. some of the technical stuff is still a little over my head. but thats what makes it fun and challenge.
if there are anymore aussies that post in this forum, could tell us where you purchased your gear in australia..

I'm new to all this and live in Australia too.
I just bought a Sharp QA-1050 off ebay from someone living in Sydney for $170 AUD.
Don't know if its a good panel for a DIY home theatre setup or not. Its an active matrix panel and that seems to be a must even for a low end setup.
My DVD player has VGA out so hopefully I wont need to buy a converter too.
Mebbe it was just blind luck that there was one for sale at the time I was looking.
Did notice in a subsequent search there we no other panels located in OZ
