Thanks Lifter

This is just the sort of information I've been looking for.

I think it would be really useful if there was a permanent thread containing links to pages like this which discuss the different types of technologies involved in diy projection.

Still doing some search, this AGP card would do it, I mean the LVDS output just fine. 4 Mb memory is little but enough for DVD playback at XGA resolution. ATI Rage Mobility chipset is one of the best for MPEG2 decoding ( though there are the Mobility Radeon's too). Kontron also has got ADD-LDVS card for Intel 845G chipsets with Intel Extreme Graphics (supports also hw motion compensation).

What LVDS interface is that thing? Anyways, if that works for a specific panel you want, and it's not expensive, it might be a good find. Personally, I'm not too interested in anything that doesn't have DVI or analog RGB input, for the exact reason you mentioned. Who wants a system that is dependent on some crappy graphics chip? How will you hook up component or RGB video from an HDTV reciever?

I'm going HTPC route so don' t need RGB/composite inputs (also no HDTV here). Sources will be DVB (PCI card receiver for digital tv) and DVD, also the analog TV card I've got has composite input for VHS. Haven't found an inexpensive LVDS panel to take apart yet though.

Ok, so if you're not interested in HDTV, why do you need the high resolution of a laptop panel? For PC gaming? If that's the case, again, you'll be dependent on that GPU. Even if you get a high-end graphics card w/ LVDS output, the GPU will be obsolete in 6 months. My GeForce 3 is practically garbage now.

Ok, I just checked out the dr-berghaus.de site. Their controller will work for just about any panel, and they are completely user configurable through a serial port. The problem with most of these controllers, is that you need a bios that is specific to the panel you are using. Their site literally lets you download bioses and upload it to the controller via serial port. I emailed Kontron to get a price.

Well, most of them only deal with large orders, so we are talking tens of thousands of dollars. The good thing is that many of them have distributers who sell single units because they have continuous orders from the makers. Arrow, Allamerican, Kontron, and Jaco to name a few.

sorry if any of these are reposts from ealier in the thread

Thanks for the links. Yeah, most of them have been posted. The Reach and the Raintree cards are the only ones that support UXGA. I have contacted Raintree before and they want a minimum 500 piece order or something. As far as the Reach cards, they can be bought from Jaco.
