You think it's worthwhile to spend $60-$90 for an LCR meter to make sure speaker crossover components match? Does matching really make much of an audible difference?

That's a big fat yes !!!
It is crucial to match crossover components if you want to have optimal depth perception but since it might be less audible than actually matching the drivers, it is not something that would be crucial to the avarage DIY.
Speaker workshop can measure L C R:http://www.speakerworkshop.com/
However ,for sure, a LCR meter is better: for $150 you can buy a good one.

Go for it, if your purpose is just for DIY loudspeakers.
Otherwise, caps range is a little bit limited.

The Heath RCL bridge 5281 is fine
It uses a pair of 9 volts and is pretty good - not a genrad or hp, but it does the trick. these go for $12 to $25 on EBay.
Occasionally you will see a General Radio 1650 bridge go for $50 to $100 -- these are very good instruments.
