Just treat myself to a Marshall 100 watts RMS guitar amplifier.
The fan was very noisy and kept changing speed all over the place.
So fitted a new one.

They put fans in guitar amps now??? I remember 15-20 years ago, some EE Times article about laptop computers suddenly having fans, and how the accepted wisdom up to that time was laptops "weren't supposed to have fans."
Looks like a little chip-amp on that heat sink behind the fan, and I'm a little surprised it can put out 100 watts.
Yet another advantage of the classic models from the 60s, not a single one of them had a fan in it!

Yes its just a chip amp behind the fan on a PC CPU type heatsink.
The amp takes up very little room.
The main pcb is huge holding the jack sockets and pots.
There is a small pcb with the DSP effects.
One thing I did notice was the poor design of the cooling system.
The fan sucks or blows (not sure) but there are no vents in the case to vent the air.
So it just blows air around the heatsink which is poor.
I recently bought a quad core laptop and that has a fan.
The air coming out of the vent is quite warm if the laptop processing is heavy.

I suppose it sucks air from the L+R sides of the chassis (which are open I believe) and blows out of the vent hole at the rear.
It looks weird, a full size Marshall 100W top with a small chip power amp....Even my modest Marshall Lead 12 combo (1984) has two TO3 transistors with proper heatsinks and no fans ;-)
Apparently fan failures are a common problem with these Marshall amps.
Maybe they have fitted cheap sleeve bearing fans instead of roller bearing fans.
This one was noisy and the speed was all over the place.
I probably caught it just in time before it finally failed.
