Laptop will not recognize MiniDSP

My Windows 11 laptop will not recognize my MiniDSP Flex or my MiniDSP 2x4HD. I have tried re-loading Device Console several times, but when either of the devices is plugged in using a USB cable, the Device Console software can not see them.

My desktop PC (also windows 11) works fine, and I am able to program the MiniDSP devices with it. However, it is inconvenient to do it this way, and I would much prefer to use my laptop.

This laptop is also used for other audio purposes, including a Motu M2 audio interface and as a music streamer… all using the USB port. I suspect that there is some kind of incompatibility between the MiniDSP USB driver and the driver for one of these other devices… but I am far from an expert on these kinds of things.

Any ideas?

Your experience is not unique, Jim. I've had the same issues with a W11 laptop in recent weeks, with weird requirements to reinstall/update firmware that is already fully up-to-date. In the end, that PC stopped recognizing any device via the console. I had to borrow my wife's new laptop to fine-tune my last build for a friend.

I think miniDSP has bungled their software recently & they need to fix it. User feedback/complaint might help accelerate the fixes.

I always break these issues down into two parts to digest. Hardware or software. I believe the general advice on software would be to make sure you have all the latest windows updates including device drivers. As a second shot at software issues you might consider posting on the MiniDSP community forums. Like here I’ve always found them incredibly helpful. As far as hardware goes. Using all the same cables, etc. Here’s to hoping you find a solution.

Dan

Until I found the actual source of the issue I keep would an open mind.
Once again, try the MiniDSP forums to see if it's a common issue and if there's a suggested solution.
If it is common they should be aware of it by now.

Dan

To resolve the issue of a laptop not recognizing a MiniDSP device on Windows 11, ensure the USB drivers are installed correctly, try different USB ports and cables, and verify that the device isn't disabled in the sound settings. Additionally, check for Windows updates, including driver updates, and consider disabling audio enhancements that might interfere with the MiniDSP.

Solution to 2x4 HD not connecting in windows 10 and 11

I finally found a way of beating this issue!

If you have a 2x4 hd that refuses to connect, and in device manager shows up as a generic USB device with some sort of error like "device descriptor failed", then all you need to do is install the windows XP/Vista drivers, not the newer ones! This problem was instantly resolved on my main PC and both laptops with this fix, didn't even have to uninstall the other drivers first.

Hope this helps someone in the future ?

I have a 2x4HD and new Device Console could see the unit but would not connect, this on Windows 11. This happened on all versions of software and firmware's. I finally found the reason.

The culprit is Windows Security blocking Device Console-software's access to folder "%userprofile%\Documents\MiniDSP\MiniDSP Device Console\MiniDSP-2x4-HD"
I still "blame" miniDSP on this since I have nothing strange on my Windows-installation and installed Device console just as one would assume. All asked permissions etc were granted during installation. Apparently installation-program fails to ask for this permission and during first use of software the software fails to recognize this and notify user.

So check "Windows Security" -> "Protection History" and see if you have the same issue. If so, click on "Actions" and select "Allow on device" and start Device Console, if this was your issue it should work now.
(Note that when this issue is present and you close Device Console the actual process might not shut down so you may need to kill it from task manager, after folder access is ok this seem not to happen anymore)

I updated all the drivers, reloaded Device Console, still no luck. However, my Wife's laptop works fine. She does not use it very often, so I can just use that machine when I need to make changes to the MiniDSP.

Thank you to everyone for the help.

It can help to remove all stored usb entries in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR

Anyway, my experience with Windows 10/11 is that usb implentation is very buggy indeed and solving these kind of problems can be very tedious. So as long as your wife's laptop does the job, that's a good solution.

I keep an old laptop running W7 32bit version for this kind of work. That OS runs rock stable and never gives any issues. Of course updates are disabled, that is still possible under W7. So it keeps working without updates breaking things all the time.
