I just gutted a Labtec Axia 712 which is a stereo headset. I haven't tried to connect it to anything yet but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with one?
There are four chips on the board.
Biggest is a 60 pin (approx) square chip

Not many hits in Google and they mention it as an AC97 Codec?

They are all surface mount devices.
I am wondering if this can be modified in any way? The one thing I was going to try is to power it with a battery. I will try to do a before and after. What else can I try? Anyone know if I can find SPDIF in here and use a different DAC with it? Which chip is the DAC and is it any good?
I assume one chip is an op amp which I could also replace?

The WM9717 looks like coming from Wolfson, but it is not in the list of their current products.

Yeah, I just checked to be sure. I couldn't find a magnifying glass but I discovered that a camcorder works really well to read the small writing🙂

sounds like a fine thing to do, but it depends entirely on the quality of audio that the AC97 codec can produce. Likely its not much though.
another option that i suggest is getting some 2702 samples from texasinstruments and using that with some opamps instead.
Im also working on interfacing TI's 2706 with their PCM1738 using I2C interface. For the powersupply im planning a split switching power supply to power output opamps. With anyluck i will be able to get it all to work under USB's 500ma limit so that I can have nice portable sound for my laptop.
Its going to be a awhile though since my knowledge and experience with this stuff is very limited and basic. But i'll let you all know how it goes

I removed the headset from the board tonight and soldered on a 3.5mm socket. I have a pair of fairly mediocre headphones called Koss Portapro. I have been listening to some MP3 music using WM player and it is hard to tell if there is much potential but I could live with it for general listening. I will do a back to back with the soundcard in a laptop I have to see if it is any improvement.
It's a pity I can't find much info out about the chips themselves. I would like to find SPDIF if it exists and use my Scott Nixon DAC to see how it would work.

I suppose you could look at all the pins on the '97 codec and see if it does have a SPDIF output. It seems that most do these days. Also it may have a I2C output for a DAC.
to me it sounds like the TI chip interfaces with the '97 codec which then has a head phone output inside. Through software the computer can control the volume...bass..etc. through the 97 codec.
