Just purchased a cheap KSS150A optical unit from China to play with my Sony CD player that was dying. I understand these are sent with a short to prevent static electricity damage and the unit did not come with any instructions so hopefully someone can point it out correctly from the enclosed picture. I assume it is the solder joint at the top right of the picture. Also I was wondering if it is a good idea to install the unit before removing it or to remove before mounting. Thanks for any help.
That's what I thought, thank you. I am just a tinkerer so have little experience with CD players. Any suggestions as to whether it is best to install the laser unit before removing that solder or before installing it to prevent static damage?
no, nothing more.
if you have the possibility of desoldering the point when everything is in place, it's better, otherwise you desolder at the last possible moment.
Of course, avoid working on carpet. 🤪

That's what I need to know. Thanks very much and I'll hope for the best. I understand a lot of these units are DOA so we will see.
Thanks everyone who helped. I changed the unit and it works fine but now the drawer is malfuntioning at times. It comes out fine but when you put a CD in and retract it, it often continues to try and drive shut and the laser unit doesn't move up. If you hit the eject again it goes and back in and works fine. Odd behavior. Is this likely slipping of the drive belt or is there a switch/cam malfunction. I'm pretty good with mechanical issues but not so much with electronics.
From memory there must be a double contact switch under the drawer of the , it's worth cleaning it with isopropanol first, then even on the side of the belt.
Thanks for this response. I took a look and could not find any switches anywhere on the drawer mechanism but I did clean the belt and that seems to cure the problem for now. Seems like I should replace that belt since it is the original, probably 35 years old, but will have to check where one can get replacement belts. They seem to be readily available for some cassette decks but haven't seen one for this particular CD player. When you say, lots of potential what kind of easier mods might be worth doing to such a player?
