I am planning to build some kind of "Frankenstein" DIY CD-Player:
The Dac will be taken from a Parasound D/AC-1500 with PCM-63K
The tray (I do not want a toploader) comes from good ol Sony CDP-103,
fully made of metal - this tray mechanism from about `84 weights about 3kg.
The case and front panel of this DIY Player will be milled out of alumium
But well, the pickup mechanism... I wanted to use a Philips VAM1202 mechanism,
because spares are easily available, but this mechanism is too flimsy and does not seem to last long.
I do now think about using a Sony based mechanism with the KSS-240A laser, because spares are cheap and easily available.
But looking at this list , I see theres is a lot of (used) players to choose from.
And here my question starts: Could anyone recommend a cheap player with digital out using the KSS-240A? As I said, I will use a good tray anyway,
so I am only intersted in the pickup mechanism and servo control.
Looks do not count, a digital output would be fine, the pcb´s should not use much space.
So did anyone collect experience wit various Sony Players using the KSS-240A?
Do transports using the KSS-240A differ very much?
Or did Sony use basically the same transports (same spindle-motors and feed motors for the laser, same control circuitry)
in wide variety of models, from boom-box to High-End-Heavy? (Like Phillips/Marantz did 😉)
Too bad, the lasers of the CDP-103 are no longer available! I would have loved to
use the original CDP-103 Pickup mechanism, which runs on magnetic raiils...
