Krell KAV300i volume control skips

Hi, I recently acquired a Krell KAV300i integrated amp and since I got it, I've noticed that the volume control seems to have a tendency to skip a few steps when i use either the remote or the buttons on the amp itself. (the amp has no rotary controller, just up and down buttons) This makes it pretty hard to set the volume right.

I ruled out the remote or the IR side, since it happens with the remote as well as with the buttons on the amp itself.

I've read that the amp uses two PMI DAC8043 chips, one per channel, to control the volume. but since the skipping happens on both channels simultaneously, it would seem very coincidental for both chips to be affected.

So my guess would be that something is generating extra unwanted button presses, due to a faulty component or a leak or something.

So I was wondering if anyone might be familiar with this amp and this type of issue.

Any help or advice is welcome, thanks a bunch in advance! 🙂http://www.diyaudio.com//www.pinterest.com/pin/create/extension/

DAC outputs are linear (software games excluded), whereas volume control tends to need logarithmic behavior. I suspect that this behavior is just part of the design. More recent chips for this such as the PGA2311 use multitap switched resistor attenuation in a logarithmic arrangement for this reason

Thanks for your reply. I also considered that might be happening. The unit has 10 LED for volume.

You can 'step' the volume and every so often this will made the next LED. I have tried to count the amount of 'steps' between lights and its not very consistent. Even when turning things down. What I have learned to do it is take it slowly, just single light presses. Reason being is if the volume is held for even a split second, the change in volume can 'skip' and there is a very abrupt change in volume.

I like to fine tune volume, almost compulsively. Obviously this is easier with a pot or in a linear digital control (like my Emotiva dac).

If this is really just how volume was controlled previously, I guess it adds to the character and charm.
