No, I'm not using Xbox as dvd player. I meant that Xbox is not as clear or bright even when using xbox component video out.
I'm using a Audio Authority 9A62 component to vga adapter to go from xbox or my prog. scan dvd player to the vga panel. Works awesome on DVD (much better than S-video), only so-so on xbox.

cool... how much did that gadget cost? the other thing I would be worried about is this... if you are sending a 480p signal to your LCD and your LCD is native to 1024x768... wouldn't that not be optimal since the LCD would be running at 640x480? Or is there a way to scale the 480p signal to 1024x78?
kl899 said:video games look insane on it. in fact, i just got back from playing halo on it and it's nothing but pure insanity. you feel like you have VR goggles on... that's how immersive it is. it's as if i've never seen my video games before. i also played amped (a snowboarding game) and rallisport challenge, both of which are equally awesome. in amped, you feel like you're going down a mountain... no joke. some people will likely have to leave the room because of motion sickness.
Another Xbox owner. Finally! Check out lik-sang.com because they have a VGA output adapter for the Xbox. It's just like the HD pack, but VGA instead of component.
Listen y'all. The Xbox does not output DVD movies at 480p, only 480i. BUT, you can download this patch here:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/tools/tools.php?page=development
to enable progressive scan. The catch is that you won't be able to use it as a DVD player on a non-progressive scan TV (but games still work).

kl899 said:I would really like to find out how to feed a progressive signal into my setup without having to go through component out. How are you feeding progressive input via component cables into your projection setup?
Proto, I use my Xbox as a DVD player but I use the component cables. The quality is excellent. The onboard VGA to NTSC converter in the Xbox is a cheap POS, which is why your S-Video output looks like crap. But if you use component output, you will get a very nice picture. I can barely tell the difference between that and my PC DVD-ROM (always the best way to run DVD's).
I'm using the Viewsonic N6 to get component inputs with a VGA RGB output. But I don't recommend this at all.
Look into the VGA adapter for the Xbox I just mentioned above. That will solve your problem and you will get the best picture you can possible get anywhere. Better than the component output. I'm an ex-video engineer, so I know what's up. You'll need to run that patch though.
You could buy a DVD player that has RGB outputs on it, but I would really suggest tweaking your Xbox and using that. It's also one less device you need to worry about, since you can't have everything hooked up at once.
I'm a bit skeptical on that lik-sang device.
Check this out from it's FAQ:
"How come when I set my xbox to 480p with the YPbPr VGA Box attached, I get a double image on the screen? (2002-12-29)
The YPbPr VGA Box is just a scan converter. It doesn't pass the true 480p signal directly to the monitor. It is designed to convert the standard analog (interlaced) component XBox signal into a VGA signal. Just set your XBox to the standard video mode, and it will work with the VGA Box properly. When the Xbox is set to 480p, the VGA box interprets the progressive frames as interlaced frames and displays a double image. (2003-01-01) "
It sounds like it won't be able to actually convert a 480p signal to VGA... it will only work with 480i 🙁

My mistake. That link I gave you for the progressive scan patch is actually a patch for DVD-X (an addon software DVD-player to the Xbox so you don't need the remote dongle).
Here's the deal. You need a modchip. I know that's a pain, but it's worth it. Install the chip, install a program called evolutionX (valholl.org) that will let you acces your Xbox harddrive via FTP (and it will do a lot more like let you play games of the HD- runs much faster and doesn't put any wear on your DVD-Rom).
Two things you'll want.
Part 1 - enabling progressive scan on your Xbox dashboard.
FTP to your xbox and copy the file "xboxdash.xbe" to your PC's harddrive. Make two copies. One goes unchanged and saved as a backup. The other you will hack. Two methods:
A) Try the patcher. Can be found here http://progscan.50megs.com/
completely legal BTW.
B) If that doesn't work (it doens't for some people, it doesn't mess anything up, it just doesn't enable prog-scan, so it's safe to use), patch it manually. It's VERY easy. You just need a hex editor. Open the file "xboxdash.xbe" w/ your hex editor.
Search for: C7 46 28 20 00 00 00
Change it to: C7 46 28 40 00 00 00
That's it. Copy the file back to your Xbox HD (overwrite the old one) and your set. Pretty simple. You need to change it back though in order to watch movies on a regular TV. The reason MS didn't enable this is because of licensing fees, and the progressive-scan output disables Macrovision as well.
Part 2 - Making a TRUE VGA output cable for your Xbox
You can buy one from lik-sang, but you can also make one. Here's a link to the tutorial:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/vga-cable.php
I have not personally tried this though because I have component inputs already.

My bad. Ok, you can either make one, or buy one elsewhere. I KNOW that there are TRUE VGA cables for sale. I would have to look around to find it. It seems that you need to use a firmware patch as well. Not to sure about this. There is lots of info floating around on the web about this. The progressive-scan DVD patch also works for games BTW (there are only a few games that need it since most are 420P anyways, Hitman 2 is one of them).
Oh yeah, a true VGA cable DOES NOT convert video signals into VGA signals. The Xbox outputs RGB initially, and then it converts it into video signals. A true VGA cable bypasses this and gives you actual VGA.

Good Stuff!
Will take me ahile to dig thru it all. the Xbox vga cable sounds like the answer- screw all these adapters! I already have a prog scan dvd player I bought to use on my phillps HDTV monitor. (best I can get- no HDTV feeds here) All I want now is vga outta my Xbox!
Thanks.

That's where all the links I just gave are.
Keep in mind that the VGA adapter tutorial is pretty old. I'm not sure what new info has come about since that. And the firmware update or whatever most likely can't be obtained legally since it was probably developed with the Xbox SDK.
Yeah, that tutorial is a bit wrong. Check out this thread if your interested in building your own:

If you want to buy one, this one will do a true VGA output of 480p or 720p.
http://members.cox.net/kgasper/xboxvga/home.html
You'll need to know which games aren't progressive scan. This is a good site that tells you the output of every game (THPS4 and NBA2K3 are 720p):
http://144.92.43.200/hdg/
The games that are 480i will need to be patched with the progpatcher. BTW, that patcher always works on games, it's just the xbox dashboard that won't work sometimes (thus requiring you to do it yourself w/ the hex editor).

Geez....
Spent about an hour on the xbox forums...what a geek fest that is!!!
I thought the DIY forums were deep!
Could not find any sites that showed a step by step on the firmware upgrade to go along with the cable. Think I'll wait till someone makes a functional unit for sale......
I can't deal with another project at this time- the xboxers are alot geekier than us! (I mean that in a respectful sort of way)😉

Wow, Nice Setup.
I want to do something very similar. I have the exact same setup.
I have my lcd mounted to my projector, the only thing i am missing is the wooden enclosure. I am haveing one small problem though, The top half of my screen is darker than the other half, it really sucks. I am going to replce the bulb and hope that it takes care of the problem. What i really want to know, is there anyway possible to place the projector further back from the screen and make the image smaller. I'm sure u can do it with the right lens. Has anyone else experimented with this????

I haven't had the problem where the top half is darker... take a look at the glass stage, fresnel, and the reflector to see if they are dirty of something like that. Take the LCD off and if it's still the same problem then at least you know it's not the LCD.
I also would like to find out how to set the OHP back further while still retaining a small enough screen size. For movies I don't mind sitting close because it makes them more immersive... but for games it makes me almost motion sick. I bet we could put another lens in front of the mirror or replace the existing lens on the head of the OHP with another one... although that 2nd option might prove more difficult.

Well I am positive that the problem with the screen being darker on the top is not the LCD, I also have a couple projection panels and they both have the exact same problem. ( i had thought they were the problem till i put the LCD in and had the same problem.
The stage glass and fresnel are both spotless. I will try a new mirror and change the bulb, i dunno what else it could be.
I am going to be getting some lens's from some old camera equipment later this week, to do some testing with. I HAVE to get this thing placed further behind me.

So, with this patcher, I don't need to flash my bios with the Pixel8 one?

Hey kl899, great job! I have the same setup, but my LCD get very hot.
Is your LCD gets hot? did you put cooling?
Mine is on a plexi and on the stage with a 1cm gap, everything gets gently warm, but the LCD seem to get all the lights heat 🙁

From what i hear it is cooler to have the lcd directly on the stage without having fans to cool it under. The 1cm gap causes a greenhouse effect and thus get warmer.
