Here are pics of my setup. The basic design is OHP + LCD... an Elmo HP-A305 SD + NEC 1545v. I enclosed it in a custom wooden case to cut down on noise and unwanted light, while using a design that still allows for adequate cooling. The screen is simply painted on the wall and uses black gaffer's tape for the borders... I highly recommend that method if you have the wall space... very nice results. I didn't want to spend the money on a new couch yet, so I bough leopard fleece to put over an old couch 🙂 I will be posting new pics of the setup and of movies this weekend... if you have any requests of what you'd like to see, let me know.

that's all i have for now. it took a lot of work to get to the point where i'm at right now. for the next volley of pics i will have a better digital camera and will make sure to adjust the exposure time correctly so the pics have the same saturation. i am pleased with how my home theater is turning out so far though. this is close to my original vision. i didn't want an OHP just in the middle of everything with wires and circuit boards... my goal is to create a home theater that is refined and pleasing to the eye... not a nerd laboratory. i think these pics will be useful to some of you who have similar visions.
as far as i know, i'm the only person that has build a case of this design for their OHP. it's pretty much what i had envisioned when i first came onto the DIY scene... but there is some work left to do. you can't see in these pics, but there are buttons for the lcd on the back of the PJ case, so i don't have to reach inside of it. also, the screen is 100" 4:3 ratio.

how does videogames look on it?
the screen is just paint and black tape for the borders. what i did was shine the projector on the wall so that i could see it's dimensions... then i marked that with a pencil. i double check with straight edges and levels to make sure it was straight. then i put masking tape around it and gave it 2 coats of ultra white ceiling paint. then for the border i bought "gaffer's tape" at a local theatrical lighting store... it's non-reflective and works very well. when you see this in real life you have to look twice to make sure it's not a real da-lite screen.
the room is in my finished basement... i believe it's about 12'x24'

video games look insane on it. in fact, i just got back from playing halo on it and it's nothing but pure insanity. you feel like you have VR goggles on... that's how immersive it is. it's as if i've never seen my video games before. i also played amped (a snowboarding game) and rallisport challenge, both of which are equally awesome. in amped, you feel like you're going down a mountain... no joke. some people will likely have to leave the room because of motion sickness.
2 thumbs up!

sharp qa-1200 bad with video games?
Hi Negative Design!
You say your panel is not good for video games?
What do you mean by that? I have not tried it much with
games (for some reason, some games have stopped
working, so I have to re-install)... but the little that I
did was very impressive.. what kind of video games are
you talking about?
Just curious.. because sometimes even I think of
"what if my screen had better resolution".. what if
I had a sharp 2500 or proxima 920? heheh 😉
Oh well.. for $90 my panel was a steal, considering the
brand new condition it was in.. I need to remind myself
to stick to my budget.. this HT stuff gets to be addicting!!

**off topic**
wats up gauchito76,
umm... its not good to post off topic on some ones thread ( I try not to) if u wanna ask me a question feel free to email me..like u did in the past...lol
anywho, no, my panel isnt good for games ( this is my experience yours may differ) you said yours looked good? i'd liek to see some pix if u have any. im talkin about Pc and Ps2 games(mostly GTA3 pc) the BEST games are emulators...Sonic looks great on it
I dont think its the resolution thats the problem any more...i think its 3 things.
1: the Screen ( i need a better one)
2:the Light (mines a bit yellowish)
3:the lens ( maybe a more powerful lens will improve games and etc...)
** sorry for the off topic ** email me with more from your progress ok.

kl899,
I've got the same OHP, how much does it cut down on noise, also do you have additional fans inside?
Thanks

i have no way of measuring it exactly but i estimate it cuts down on 50% of the noise because when I open the front door to it while it's on, it's a lot louder. the only fans are the original ones inside the OHP. when I did was made a small duct between the OHP outtake and the outtake vent on the side of the case with a piece of linoleum taped into a roll. before i had the duct, it was like a sauna. now that i have the duct, it's barely warmer on the inside than on the outside of the case, and as far as i can tell the lcd stays within acceptable operating temperatures. they longest i've had it continuously running so far is 3 hours (which is probably about the longest it will run on long runs, since movies are usually only 2 hours), and the lcd never showed any signs of getting overheated.
like i say, it works great to block out the excess light that comes out of the various gaps in the OHP. as you can see from the pic with it running, it is hard to tell that there is any light at all coming out of the case.
just a cool little thing... see the green LED on the back of where the case in the operating pic? that's the LED that was originally on the NEC 1545v by the adjustment buttons 🙂

Remember, the highest temp that panel (is recomended to) take is about 90 degrees F. Just a heads up. I just want to say great project, and now it is my quest to beat it 😉!
nice case

Good job on the case. Now if we can figure out the fresnel thing to get the damn projectors farther from the screen.....What are you using for video signals-S-video? Do you have a prog. scan dvd so you can do 480p? Even S-video on X-box sucks- can't read text well at all. Even with component video my DIY setup is nowhere near as bright as my 50" Phillips monitor. Can't quite understand that......

Proto5 - If you are talking about playing DVD's on the xbox... don't go there. The xbox sucks as a DVD player. I used to think it was good until I watched it on my 100" projector. I borrowed my dad's DVD player and it was much better.... little/no "tearing" in fast movement scenes. Now I bought a Panasonic RP-62 and it is the best yet. For instance, you know how the text in those "FBI" warnings is usually hard to read? Well on the RP-62 it is much sharper. I was using composite on the xbox, s-video on my dad's player, and s-video on my new panasonic. So all are interlaced sources. The RP-62 is a progressive player but as far as what I understand, you can only get progressive output on component video... I would really like to find out how to feed a progressive signal into my setup without having to go through component out. How are you feeding progressive input via component cables into your projection setup?
I would expect your Phillips monitor to be brighter... you would need a very bright projector to beat that!
