Winisd shows a nasty 5 db response hump centered around 75 hz for 1 cubic foot sealed. Optimum is 8.323 cubic feet sealed for ruler flat response down to 60 hz and an f3 of 27 hz.
Is this for car or home?

Thanks for your reply, sub is used for home, iam using electronic xo at 125 hz, could you explain wot f3 is. what effect would the larger box have on power handerling, low end response and effecancy, could you post the response chart. Is there any one out there using this sub for home, any comments, advice would be appacrated. I use a tri amp set up with fostex xo for main speakers (vintage B&W 603 with vifa tweeters as I cooked the organals) and kitset sub xo feed off the lf output.
F3 is the point at which the response is -3db from reference (0db).
The larger box should require less power and play more efficiently.
At 20 hz you would see a 14 db gain, so your "low end" would be considerably more substantial.
If you like the sound from your current set-up you may not like the "optimum" version. Your 1 foot box would be really punchy, while the big box would be pretty flat until quite low.

Thanks Toanail that clears up some things for me, Ive eq this
setup with a sub paramectric eq. I was disapointed with this subs house shaking abilty even though it dos have good punch. Iam going to build new box asap. Any thoughts on ply wood instead of mdf, I like the idea of concreat but think that it will fall though the floor. Any one have suggestions. I also wander if shape makes much diff for a sub, ie a round box, but how would you make it? Wedge shape to cut down back waves on driver etc.

Yeh, with that response curve it would sound punchy😉
A sub box can be just about any reasonable shape you want, as the wavelength of the reproduced sound is much greater than the dimensions of the box. Just brace the walls to stop them moving when under pressure.
Plywood, if of good quality, can work better than MDF, but the price differential is not proportional to results. I tend to use ply now only when making boxes that will receive a lot of abuse, or it comes preveneered with a particular finish I need, or it's left over from another project.

MadMax said:have you tryed custom wood.
Oh yes, it works great for small boxes, but for larger enclosures you can have a problem with splits developing over time.
These days, as good wood is expensive in the UK, I tend to build most of the box from MDF or ply, stain it black, and then add a front baffle from some nice figured wood. My current favorite is sycamore, I have a rapidly dwindling stock that has a really nice flame figure like maple. I would post some piccies of my centre speaker for my HT setup, but the batteries are flat in my camera, so I may do it later if you're interested.
Hi guys I've been playing with winisd and a vented box looks like giving best response although the EPB is 37.8 recommended is 56 or more for vented box. If I derate it and watch out for subsonic unloading will it work. Any help / suggestions.
Thanks Max.
Thanks Max.
Transmission Line Sub
Ive been doing some more research and thinking on what to do with this sub, what about a tl, would this driver be suitable, Iam thinking of adding a 12 inch pipe to currant box to try out, would this give me some idea how it will sound in a proper tl box. fs is 16hz what would be a good starting lenth of tl.
Cheers Max
