Hi,
I have a Kenwood KDC-X817. When I hooked it up the power wires (no other wires) and hit the reset button all that happens is: it turns on says Kenwood, then "code off", then "all off", then the face rolls up into the normal postion and screen goes black, then a few seconds later it rolls back to the insert a CD position.
Anyone know what's wrong with it, if anything?

I have this radio, sounds like the front ribbon cable . I have replaced mine tooo and is common with those models
Yeah it was the cable. I replaced it with my own homemade cable made from IDE cable. I got the buttons to work, but now I can't see the display.
It was working before.
I think I might have damaged the display. Cause I took the whole display apart trying to find the problem. Some one on another site was quite convinced it was one of the buttons that was stuck. But everything I read about problems with this unit was about the ribbon being bad. I wish I read your reply first, then I wouldn't have a damaged display. Or have to think about whether it is damaged. But it might be some bad soldering that is the problem, but I'm not too sure. I might resolder the inside connection sometime and check it again.

I wish I had the patience to wait for a reply on this forum. I asked in one of those really bad caraudio forums.
You were right it was the cable. But the receiver was "damaged" beyond being able to put a new cable in because some salesman on another forum told me that it was a stuck button. So I took it apart and started to play with the buttons. Then I wanted to test if it was the cable. And then I soldered my own cables in so many times before I got them to work (the soldering was hard), that the unit was too damaged to put an aftermarket cable in and I threw it anyway 🙁
I hate when people who don't know what they're talking about give advise. Esspecially people on forums who's goal is to sell you something. And I'm not trying to insult anyone cause I used to be one of those people; I'm not a saleman though.
Basically it's my fault for messing up this unit, but the bad advise helped me mess it up, oh well. No one give bad advise ok?

Dude its a $3.00 flat ribbon cable.
Whatever and whoever convinced you that you were adept enough to make a IDE cable work in its place.😱
Sorry you think you got bad advice, but it sounds like it would not have helped to give you good advice either.

Oh and by the way I'm a member of one of those other car forums, and a cerified technician with 22 years experiance.
You have no one to blame for the damage but YOURSELF ... You worked on it , so eat your mistakes like a man...

And stop blaming others for your self inflicted gunshot wounds.

Or maybe pay a real tech to fix your broken items. Even I knew it was the cable, But what really gets me is your welding a ide cable in place how howky can you get thinking that that would work. WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING!!!
And as for the button advice well that the second cause of your type trouble, so how did opening it up and check the buttons damage it beyond repair Huh?
Try using a sledge hammer next time its faster

I did get it to work with that cable. That's what told me that it was indeed the standard cable that was the problem.

I did get good advise and it did help.

Yes, you certainly sound dumb enough to be either. You also are clearly dumb enough to be insulted by my statement. 22 years of experience as a technician, wow

I blame me, but the person who gave that advise was interested in me buying a new Kenwood. And they did not know what they were talking about, since the cable can be damaged and the display screen still lights up. I should have picked up on that. I also have given bad advise in the past and today I realise that I shouldn't have because I didn't know what I was talking about. So I can critise me in the same way I criticize him, except I never try to sell any one anything.

I tired two cables. They both worked, you could say. Problem was I lost my patience with them and the unit.

No it was not really "'damaged,'" that's why the word was in quotes. I desided I would consider it damaged for my purposes and threw it away. It worked, but I could not put an aftermarket cable in it at that point anymore I think.
