Kef 104/2 speaker question

Hello all,
I have a pair of Kef 104/2 speakers that I have owned for 32 years.
They have been very well loved and taken care of, however, recently I am noticing some distortion, unwanted noise, coming from the lower midrange on one speaker.
Visually both mid range are pristine.
The foam donut on the lower woofer is "tattered", and I see I can easily fix that;
but I doubt that would cause a problem with the lower mid range?
Any suggestions?
I'm sure it's time to replace the capacitors, could this be the problem?
Thanks for your ideas in advance, Dan.

Are the foam surrounds ok on the two internal speakers. The 104/2 have forward firing mids x2 and tweeter and inside the box are two woofers connected by a metal bar, if you get a mirror and a torch you should be able to see the state of the woofer surround through the front port.

Hi Ugg10, Thank you for your reply.
I took the two mids off, they are completely sealed from behind. Again, they "look" perfect, from the front. While in there I also removed the hatch revealing the upper woofer, both upper and lower surrounds are flawless. I have not taken the crossover out and checked visually for leaking caps, but I think that's next.
Again, putting my ear to the lower mid, I hear 'not so nice' sounds.

Could be a loose connection in the wiring or (and that might be worse) a voice coil running against the magnet poles. Wrt the latter: try pushing the cone with your hand in the middle and at the edges. When pushing at an edge at some point you'll hear the coil touching the poles. That should happen at the same point, regardless where you push the edge. It should not happen pushing the center.

If things are not OK, the driver either is misaligned or the voice coil has been overheated, causing loose windings. The first could be fixed by a repair shop, the second I'd say is a total loss. Please notice that the mids are not conventional drivers with a basket, but that the magnet assembly is mounted on the back of the mid casing.
