Cal is right on this one: Make it a "special treat" to clean, organize, disinfect about 3 times a year. Its like having an extra birthday!

same here. but make the cleanup around once a year. 😀

If I cleanup my workspace, I cannot find many tools and the parts. So I prefer them to be at the place where my memory is. Recently, I found my missing probe DMM in the wardrobe.

A cleaned up workspace leads to more search time. Then it feels homely once messed up.

exactly how I do things in my workshop. when friends come over to have something fixed, they often wonder how I find the tools in all the chaos.

so that means I vote for a messy workshop.

Likewise ... so when they ask "where's your screw drivers at?" or whatever, you say "right over there ..." pointing off into the ozone ... then encourage them to find whatever they are looking for by putting things away, taking out the trash, etc ... then when they are done fooling around and messing up the place further and gone and you can't find anything yourself anymore, out of necessity, you have to clean up put stuff away ... this may seem like a "Rube Goldberg" approach to getting the shop cleaned up, but it works ... except for the tools your "friends" have thrown into the trash ... 😱

Actually, I've tried this three times since you posted and the place looks no better. I suppose I should just go with my Inner Slob and accept that my workshops will always look like disaster areas. The biggest improvement for me was keeping the cats out- no more surprise "hidden treasure" and many fewer broken tubes.

Nancy Claster was a family friend. When my parents had her use my name with the Magic Mirror, I ran out of the room crying because I was just in my underwear and very embarrassed. This subject cuts very close to home indeed. As an engineering tech who's job it is to support 6 engineers in the arena of the lab, I find that trying to keep things organized is a losing battle. Don't get me wrong, these guy's are top notch designers of electronics, but there is just something about the creative mind that has to have the "stuff" handy to touch and look at. Plus they tend to be in a hurry to find the answer, and "what's wrong with a little clutter anyway". Corporate has reciently started pushing the safety comittee to poke their nose in and make some changes, but it will never happen. The engineers tell them to bite. Is this true of artist's also?

I have gone to art school worked in engineering design consultancies and been an academic. Every where there was mess. I guess its necessary for creativity. We drove most of our accountants crazy...
When I work on a project I usually remember where I put everything. But when I am away for a few weeks and come back, it looks like a mess.

Running the blade up and down wears out the mechanism. He's saving repairs.

Boy ! That's the exact same reply I had in my mind ! You beat me to it Cal . 😀

I have a very large workshop. Four large rooms . One is messy all the time and the others keep going from messy to clean over and over again. Mainly when we have visitors ! 😀
It's amazing how fast a clean room can get overpopulated with tools and parts. The reverse never happens that fast.
By the way those rooms are normally called the living room , the dinning room, the pantry and the bedroom !😀

No pictures now. I'm ashamed how it looks now ...clean ! That must mean that we are having visitors and current activity is low . This period is MOST frustrating !
