My copy of Katy Lied by Steely Dan has a couple of oddities. Does anyone else see this:
1)Audacity spectrum plot shows clearly a strong notch around 8kHz
2)Sequential samples at almost plus/minus digital full scale eg Black Friday at 1:48.0200
This CD is not overcompressed
I am wondering if this is a genuine release or a pirate

As I note what country your from.....down here in Argentina, you can't find an original CD ...they are ALL copies! A simple walk downtown, you will find giant outlets with zillions of titles, CDs', DVDs' Computer programs (Which don't work 90% of the time). Some public service commercials on TV, condemning pirating....is a joke. Go to these mega-outlets, there is pirated material by the ton, hundreds of thousands....just in one outlet.........originals? Not to be found!

Not much pirate audio here. This was bought in a well known CD chain here, so there should be no problem.
The wikipedia entry for this album says that there were mastering problems with the dbx processor and another article by the mastering engineer reports trouble with the vinyl version due to excessive HF from close miking cymbals

Hmm, I just re-ripped my old Katy Lied release and have a Flac file around here somewhere. I'll try and take a look at it with Audacity.

I looked at my vinyl rip yesterday and didn't see the things mentioned. Now I'm looking at the rip from Citizen Steely Dan and see the 8kHz notch.
Neither are near full-scale at 1:48 in (I assume at Jeff P's snare drum that hits harder in the right channel).
I have a digitized copy from a Spanish import 'Greatest Hits' cassette I'll look at next.
edit: No notch on the (pre-CD era) cassette.

I re-ripped Black Friday from a) my very old Katy Lied CD that I got through BMG many years ago, and b) from an almost equally old copy of Decade. Neither showed an 8k notch nor were there any full-scale spikes around. 1:48 (but some looked real close).
So I am guessing that any 8k artifacts were created during the remastering process for the Citizen release.

I recommend to check CD with Tau Analyzer software.
You can download it from

There appears to be two versions of this CD, the original, which allegedly sounds a bit "flat"
and a remaster, which is tweaked to compensate for the DBX problems. It sounds like you have the old one.
See: Katy and The Gremlin and Katy Lied Album
My copy has a spectrum very similar to Sofaspuds sample
