Hello, can somebody give me a primer on Karaoke? If I search on it, I get a confusing jumble of either too dated or too detailed information.
What do modern media formats look like? I guess at one time CD+G files on physical CD's were the norm. What does current media consist of; what kind of files?
What do you need to play karaoke? I see dedicated karoke players for sale, but these look like powered speakers with mic input and mixing and flashing LEDs; hardly worth the expense for an audio guy with lots of gear. What do you need to roll your own karaoke system?

Budget is key, but if you want a more serious Karaoke system, get something like this and connect to your main home theater (screen, receiver, speakers):

You can go cheap and get Bluetooth all-in-one Karaoke microphones from Amazon, but the sound quality will be quite mediocre, especially if you use the small built-in speaker on the microphone itself. But this is still fun, especially for casual karaoke. You play the "karaoke version" of the song you want on Youtube (there are tons) and sing along on the microphone:

Surely there must be some gaming consoles that will support Karaoke. Playstation?
Looks like there is something for Nintendo Wii.

The CD+G format, which combines synchronized audio and lyrics on a single CD, has dominated the karaoke scene for decades. However, with the advancement of digital media, many different file formats have emerged as popular alternatives for karaoke use. Some popular formats include MP3+G, KAR, KFN, MIDI, MP4.Hello, can somebody give me a primer on Karaoke? If I search on it, I get a confusing jumble of either too dated or too detailed information.
