Hi, I hope this is ok to post here, I know there is a wealth of knowledge here.
I was just given a 4 year old Toshiba 61" projection TV that was possibly hit by a power surge. The owner didn't want to mess with it since he was buying a new one anyway. I pick the TV up tonight. I'm assuming it's the predecessor to this one:

Does anyone have an idea what I'd be up against if it was a power surge? I know it's highly subjective, I'm handy with a soldering iron but am far from a TV repairman. I think it would be fun to fix myself but realize I might be over my head in a big way.
Any ideas how to approach this? I really don't want to spend 500 bucks if I took it in to get repaired, I'm saving my money for a plasma TV in a couple years but this was free so I'm willing to play with it.
Thanks!
Darren

I urge you to be careful and not kill yourself.
As an experienced TV repair person I can tell you there are dangerous voltages inside TV sets and the bigger they are, the more lethal the voltages.
Suggest you withdraw the power plug. Put it in your pocket remove the back off the set and have a quiet look.
If its all fried put the back on and dispose of it. If its not fried may be just the mains fuse. You can find that by following the mains cord. Remove the fuse and check. If its blown replace, stand well back, plug the cord in and turn it on.
If it goes, good. If it doesn't maybe now is the time to make your decision to dispose because you could be looking at a costly repair.
Whatever you do be careful. Take no risks and do not touch anything inside. Its tempting to "play" with things and get them going but my experience has been if its had a power surge the cost of repair can be very expensive.
Take care.

I have a friend that used to be a TV repairman so I won't fiddle with much unless he's with me. I don't intend to do much beyond checking the power supply. I don't like messin' with stuff I'm not familiar with. If it's fried at least I'll have a 200 dollar remote spare for my other Toshiba TV. I can then scrap the TV itself. I'm not sure it was a power surge though because the owner said he came home and it didn't work one day a week ago. It's only 4 years old so I would assume it is something else. The power LED flashes red when he plugs it in.
Of course, another possibility is that you use an LCD setup set to reverse-image to replace the innards. I understand that the rear-projection screen makes for a nice image...
If you do decide to scrap it ...maybe offer it up to DIY'rs rather than a landfill? (of course they would need to be local)

Ok, how's this. I get it home and plug it in and whalla! Beautiful picture. Nothing wrong with this TV at all. It was on an improper video setting though, I think his kid might have switched it while playing with buttons. It is in perfect shape and works like a charm!!!
It is a 1500 dollar 61" big screen for free! He already had bought the replacement too!

He he...
It was a guy here at work that I didn't know. He offered it up to anyone with a truck that could take it away tonight. I was the only guy that had a truck so I took it. I was expecting a piece of crap that would end up in the trash but it's in perfect shape and works as if it was new. I can't believe it.

wow incredible!!! very awesome!
tell him it cost you to repair it or something... so it doesn't hurt him too much knowing it was such a simple problem to fix... 😀

Yeah, I'm going to pretend that I haven't figured it out yet mainly because I don't want to put that stress on him 🙂
It's your week for sure!
If I were you I'd run right out and buy a couple of bucks worth of lottery tickets...these chances don't come often 😉
then when you hit it big come share with us humble project builders 😎 (just kidding)

Ok, now I have problems
After watching for about a half hour consecutively the tv went black and the power led is flashing. Do you think it's overheating? Is there a fan back there that may have gone bad?
I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Got another 30 seconds of video before it went black again. Now I remove the plug and plug it in and the tubes fire up then shut down and the led blinks. Any ideas?
Knew it had to be too good to be true 🙂
