My solder/desolder station puts some really nasty stuff on the AC line. You ought to see what it does to a circuit without good regulation.

The metcal works by generating a HF in to a coil mounted in the soldertip the metal then generates heat at a very precise temperature..
For the same reason the cable to the solder tip is some RG-type coaxial cable....
Maybe a defect in the screen...
