So is replicating ywh's lamp assembly the magic bullet?
I am looking at building a custom from an ohp and lcd panel.
Wondering how hard it will be to simulate his work.
Is an elmo 305 as good?

remember though, YWH uses a dismentled 14" lcd monitor. any LCD monitor screen will be much superior to the projection panel you can find. But, to get better result, you need a good point light source, like HQI bulbs or HMI bulds. elmo a305sd uses 575W HMI, you don't need to retrofit a MH. with cheap replacement bulbs available for the forum, it would be the good choice if you don't want the hassle of retrofitting .
I thank you.
This is exactly what I wanted to hear, though I fear it may be too good to be true. I am a newbie, so bear with me. Can I get some concurrence on the board? (Like a second opinion). I am just wanting to make the best decision quality and money wise.
Thanks for the help. Please email me your ideas for the dvd test disc I am producing.

I'm looking at an elmo with hmi. Should I be looking at hqi instead? Newbie needs hep
Am unsure of what to do as the elmo 305 will be auctioned off in 3 hours.
Thanks,
JT

I dont know why everyone isnt copying it to begin with. He put up very detailed specs and pictures of the setup. And for god's sake... forget projetion panels!
I would like to collect his info onto my site to make a resource...
Can someone help me sort it out? I know his stuff is great. I am ordering an elmo 305 in hopes of attaining some of his quality.
My website is coming along. I have to work on it at night and upload during the day. I am taking pictures today of the garage that I am tearing apart and rebuilding as a theare room.
Hopefully the next set of pics will be with the room painted, acoustic tiles installed, and frame for the rack set up.
My test room will have a dedicated camera for samples. Anyone suggest a quality webcam, pretty cheap, just big enough for sample pics.
Thanks,
Jarrett

JCB people use panels still for ease of transportation, I have a lcd projector in the HT and will have a lcd monitor on a OHP for the bedroom, however to bring things to others houses or to take the experience outside for the Drive in feel a projection panel is much more portable and safer to move around then a lcd monitor with easily broken flex cables. Thats why I still have projection panels anyway and lets face it some people are just scared to rip something apart and maybe break it( not I) but there are less tech savvy people around

Da-lite is the best screen, elmo is the best stock ohp, what is the best lcd for diy?
I figure 400:1 contrast ratio, 1024 x 768 res, dvi-input, and response time of under 25ms as the target device. Oh and it must be easy to disassemble. Any hints?
Thanks,
Jarrett Towe

How about this? Just found it and it looks like it's very near to your desired specs.

looks good, no idea who the mfg is, so no idea on the quality.
Good price though. Is it DVI?No its analog. Big difference for me coming from pc. May be next model up!

cball that is a good find, well if the responce time is 30 ms or less it will be a good find, many cheaper monoitors are 50 ms

TigerDirect has the TDV Vison F153 Silver/Black 15" 1024x768 LCD Monitor $209.99 after rebate. 25 ms reponse, 350:1 contrast.
$50 rebate Exp 6/30/03
I swiped this deal from www.techbargains.com
25 ms response 😀
No clue on disassembly. I am getting a different 15" LCD from a friend for $75. He doesn't have the specs so I need to find them out for myself. Just keepin my eyes open for deals you guys might want to grab up and test out.

Great, another chance for me to be negative 😉
I can think of a few bad points:
- 575W means heat, lots of it. Which of course means noise to keep everything cool. (Not to mention the energy bill)
- The 575W's from asia have a typical life of 400 hours. Even the 'good' ones last for just over 800/1000 hours.
The lumen output is great though, if you can live with the high cost/noise then go for it.
Europeans should consider either retrofitting an OHP to MH (best HCI or CDM) as these bulbs are MUCH cheaper/ easier to obtain here. These bulbs have a longer life/better color temp and will save energy/noise/heat.
Or even go after an OHP with a 400W HQI fitted as standard (I think Liesegang or A+K makes them)
I'm running a 3M 9550 retrofitted to 150W CDM MH with a 15" desktop TFT. Bulb life=6000hrs, No extra fans needed, my PC makes more noise than my OHP.
The total running cost is extremely low, i can run a nice screensaver just for the heck of it and not worry about a thing.
The biggest disadvantage of OHP's is the throw distance. Its impossible to project a mid sized (5-6 foot) image without getting the pj in the middle of the room.
It also limits your screen choice. The angles at which the light hits the screen are too big for any high gain screen 😡
Oh,
about comparing comercial pj's to these diy's: a friend of mine who owns a XGA dlp (dunno the brand/type) came over to watch my results.
He was suprised by the pic quality (not much worse than his) and by the noise (not even in the same league)

No, you need to learn how to search on the board.....this question has been asked and answered a million times before......the Elmo, Dukane, Buhl OHPs that use the HMI bulb are the best OHP you can get. The bulbs last only 750 hours but they are the brightest we can achieve.
Thank you for this info. It was what I was wanting to hear from someone. I am awaiting my elmo 305 now and I am excited. I just began tearing my garage apart to build my theater. this board and its awesome members have really jump started me.
I am waiting on my qa-1150 as well. I know its a crappy panel from what I read, but the price was low enough to let me buy the elmo guilt free. I'll keep you posted. What is the cost of rplacement bulbs?
HTanks,
Jarrett Towe
