I have a great problem. We’re moving to a new (old) house, and the spouse has put me in charge of doing the sound system(s). 😀😀
Currently, in the old house – I’ve got two of GM's Jordan MLTL's . Very, very nice.
In the basement – I'm setting up a 5.1 system. Picked up a Sony STR-V444ES on ebay. I’m building two massive dipole subs using the Pyle PPA-15 woofers similar to these, except they're more like the NaO design. Not sure yet what the mains & surrounds will be (Jordan sealed? With or without a tweeter? One of Zaph’s Seas metal cone designs?). But I think I can handle it, and it’s gonna be where I go to scratch my rockin’ itch.
The trickier one is the upstairs in the living room. This will be music-only. I’d like it to be similar to the Jordan MLTL’s – a nice little system for intimate listening in front of a fireplace. She Who Has Given Me The Assignment has said that the speakers will fit into built-in cabinets on either side of the fireplace. The space available for each speakerr is 32 inches wide x 10 inches deep x 16 inches high. (80 x 25 x 40 cm for those of you who live in a country that uses a reasonable system of measurement.)
This geometry is Non-Negotiable, and is part of the deal. If I don’t like it, she will probably get me little Bose cubes for both upstairs and downstairs.
The upstairs speakers will literally be bookshelf speakers, and will be on shelves inset into the wall in a room that’s 8m x 5m. The speakers will be about 10 feet apart.
So, what do I do? I think that my concerns are:
1) No BSC because I’m close to infinite baffle, so anything with a XO that expects to be 3 feet from a wall is out.
2) Possible nasty resonances from the built-ins shelving and the fireplace between. Each shelving unit has a total size about 30 inches by 30 inches by 12 inches deep. The fireplace sticks out about 1 foot from the wall.
3) Off-axis response – the speakers in the middle of the long wall.
4) Please add anything else I’ve forgotten or haven’t learned yet.
What I think I’d like to do is rebuild the Jordan MLTL’s with a front port, and lay them on their side. If (when?) off-axis response is a problem, I can add a tweeter on top of it in a separate enclosure on the shelf above. I can buy new drivers, so I'm looking at a budget of somewhere around $300-$400.
Let me know if this is a workable plan, if there are any better plans, and what else I need to consider…

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Unless I completely misunderstand:80 x 25 x 40 cm
The first ML-TL GM designed is 31,04" x 6,97" x 4,31" so just a little bit too high for your given space.
Make it a little bit shorter, change the cross-section-area accordingly and you should be done.
Losing an inch in the lenght of the line shouldn´t be too far off (bass) from the original.
Which material will you use for the speaker and how much "air" do you need to the top?
And please no Bose.

Then rather go for a small BR with a Fostex FE127E/167E.😉

That was my thought. Either build a new enclosure or cut off the end by an inch. Bend the port tube so that I can get the proper length & run it out the front.
Amen to that. And please no Bose.![]()
That's another option I might take, & use the Jordans in the basement w/dipole subs.

Rather than modify GM's MLTL, with unpredictable results, you could try a vented enclosure. The Jordan website has an 8 litre enclosure which sounds good. Alternatively, the VTL was originally designed to also operate as a vented enclosure with a bit of modification to the internals. I may have the notes for that around somewhere.
The JX92S will work well in sealed enclosures down to around 3 litres.

Do you have room for a sub?
I'm making a set of mains using Jordan JX92S in sealed 8.5L boxes from Parts Express (.25ft^3 nominal). They should be finished tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.
I thought about putting a port in the boxes and closing it off when I was using a sub, but I didn't do that. Sims for that speaker in a ported 8 liter box don't show the bass going very low, and besides, how much air can you move with a speaker that's really about 3" across? I already have a set of small ML-TL's that use Fostex F103e's. (Search for "Locust II".)
Unless you never listen to anything besides mandolin music and string quartets, I think the way to use those small FR's is to put them in a sealed box, if the Qts is reasonable for that, and use a sub.

Possibly...Dave Jones said:Do you have room for a sub?
I tried out the Jordan MLTL's with a dipole sub last week, in the old house before moving things. I think you'll be happy with the Jx92s/sub combo - the Jordan sounds a lot better when you take the bass handling away from it. If I don't cram my Jordans on my bookshelf, they'll go in the basement, sealed, on top of dual 15" dipole subs 😎
I've found the CSS WR125S in the recommended 7 liter enclosure to sound better when close to a wall making it a true bookshelf speaker. Add a super tweeter for sparkle and you're in business.

Oh I don't know - I'm currently finishing off some of GM's 48" MLTLs and they're running to below 35Hz ...
Colin
The WR125S in the 7 liter enclosure is flat to 60 Hz, without room gain. Put it next to a wall and it will surprise you.

cant one use a sub with a ML-TL?

You can, but in my limited experience (one example), it is better to seal off the port when you use a sub. It just sounds cleaner. Of course, you would want to verify that the resulting sealed box alignment would be reasonable.
Thanks all!
Thanks all for the input and suggestions.
There are many good routes to take. (I wanna try the WR125, the Fostex... too many speakers, too little time!)
But I think I'll start with sideways Jordan MLTL's. I'll pull two sets of wires to each shelf, though, because someday I might like to go sealed Jx92s with a small sub/woofer (dual sub or active).
Again, thanks everyone! This forum is great. 🙂

Greets!
The Jordan ML-TLs I did were designed to not need any BSC in a typical smaller room app, so stuck in a bookshelf will require damping the vent as required to achieve a ~aneochoically flat alignment. I also recommend adding baffle extensions and stuffing that walls off the rest of the shelf's cavity/damps it.

Jordan monitors
Funny I should run into this thread as my small company is in the process of developing a range of Jordan based monitors, I'm also looking at developing a partnering sub [welcoming any advice] as the speakers are superb but need bass augmentation...
You can see the prototype design below next to a Monitor Audio floorstander.

SAB, nice idea. i have also considered building this. sort of copying gallo but using better drivers. how did you build the mould? fiberglass with a bowling ball mould?
Re: Jordan monitors
It's pretty. Did you know you have competition? I've seen another website that has a JX92S in a small, round enclosure. I thought the other one was is too small an enclosure, though.
