Do keep in mind that our brains are wired to expect this kind of combing, so althou worthwhile trying to minimize it, its soniv impact it probably not as great as the FR chart might lead you to expect.

Actually, acording to the simulations the drop is only about ½dB after I apply the filter.
Not a big problem...
There is however a bigger issue, a 500-1700Hz "peak" @ 1-1.5dB.
I suppose it'll mostly just accentuate voices? In the end I don't know if there is anything to do about it anyway? Applying complicated filters doesn't really ring true in my ears. Even if the frequency curve is improved the filters risk being bad for the sound.

I finally got the bsc's going.
Wow!!!
The speakers does sound great. A little odd but great non the less.
The sound is so clean I'm having trouble believing it.
The bass is tight and clear.
However these speakers may not be the best choice for heavy metal. Too clean?
Not enough of a "kick in the gut"? I don't know, it's wierd?
I do love them but it'll take some getting used to listnening to Metallica this way?
If I can get the living room cleared up (I've just moved in) I might just invite some people over for som fresh opinions.

Hej Marcus,
Thinking of buying these JW units myself- when you say they sound strange, how would this be? If I used these in a horn loaded cabinet to increase the sound levels, do you think they would they then be ok with say, QOTSA ?
Tack så mycket

Everything is super clean with not even a hint of distortion.
The bass is deep and I have no problem what so ever to pickout every pick on a bass guitarr.
So everything is there and it sounds good, I really like my new speakers.
However, when I play heavy metal the "oumph" is not really there? I'm thinking this kind of music might be better with less detailed speakers and larger woofers?
The vocals are to die for!
Ron Sexsmith, Robert Cray, Susanne Vega, Sanne Salomonsen, Ben Harper and so on are just awsome.
Depeche Mode, VNV nation, ZZ top and others are quite ok as well.
But when I play Metallica something is kind of lacking? Everything else sound so well that it's hard to pinpoint exactly what is missing? That's why I think it's a little odd.

I just thought I'd make a little comment again.
If you're thinking about going full range, just go for it.
Download MKJ's spreadsheets (it's very affordable) and try a ml tqwt for yourself.
I went crazy with the boxes and build a sandwich cabinet but if you stay within reason they aren't that hard to build.
It really is a cheap speaker.
Boxes, drivers, binding posts, some wiring, screws, acoustic wool and you're done.
I can't compare the speakers with commersial units yet since I've been away from hifi so long that I don't remember how the comersial speakers sound.
But these little beauties are awsome. Very good bang for the buck. 😀

I doubt you'll get the impact you need for heavy rock music - they're only 4" speakers, after all. A sub helps if you want to go really deep and loud but it is extra complication and another box.
Good looking project. The shape is very elegant.
If you want to read a bit more on floor notch and positioning, there's an interesting piece by Genelec on the Hidden Wires site

It's mostly about home theatre but there's a bit about positioning main speakers and subs to tune out room nulls.

Thanks. 🙂
Maybe you're right? A small sub to bring the impact?
Otoh I'm happy as it is.
Before experimentng any further I'll finish these ones, they need paint...
A summer project painting them.
I'll be using epoxi to seal the mdf and then some hard shiny paint to get the right look.
Most likely it'll very toxic and smell really awfull.
I'll take a look at the link.

Hi i have some Aurousal A1 speakers which use the Jordans.
I was a bit surprised at the begining when you wrote they were bright. I thought them to be very warm in the top end. Bass when i first listened to them was a bit lacking but when i put some granite under each speaker it made a big improvement. Boom was eliminated and the lower mid range came through giving more attack to bass lines.
Mine need lots of toe in so the speakers cross the listening position. They do need experimenting with positioning.

I haven't really begun experimenting with positioning yet. I'll be mounting Carbon fibre cones under them. But Not until after they are painted.
I suppose you're right, complicated isn't the right word.
Adding a sub would be easy enough and I would have bass upp the ****
However it'll have to wait since I'm planing on starting the next project soon. Pre and power amps...
The odd part is this.
I'm listening to ZZ-top right this minute and everything is good. It's like everything goes except heavy metal? Even EBM is good.
Maybe a sub is the answer? It'll be great for parties anyway. 😉

Remember that the biggest benefit from adding a sub is improved midrange (as long as you put a high pass on the amp driving the Jordan).
