Joining you

Interested currently in building a solid state amp. Recently completed three EL84 based point to point SEP amps from scratch based on known good circuits, some leftover bits from tube guitar amps built ~ a dozen years ago, figured may as well go for it. Of course it started with one and led to three. Acquired two more vintage SS preamps (now have three Superphon Basics running). Two Dual 1019 idler decks and a Magnavox CD610 (dual DAC / Belgium). Three sets of home build OB speakers, coral holey baskets, Diatone 610 reproductions and Betsy's. Also have a couple quite old console pull tube SETs one at work nearfield and another in the garage.

Hard to make a bad EL84 amplifier. Do your Holey Baskets have a plaible surround?

Thank you Dave.

My experience confirms your point about EL84 amplifiers. Latest build coined the 'Kyoto' schematic developed by TriodeLuvr found on AudioKarma. I had resurrected two Akai M7 integrated monoblocks from an old reel to reel, then decommissioned them and used the OT's, EF86's and EL84s in the Kyoto amp now residing in the living room red by a PS Audio PSIII phono pre and preamp. Into little JVC cherry fullrange speakers. Stepson gifted me a new carbon ProJect turntable, a pleasing combo.

Holey baskets: they arrived with one working, one not (low volume, bad sound, low resistance reading). Reconing service informed the cool old translucent cones are unobtanium so the fix the one bad driver they'd have to sacrifice the original cone. Had both reconed with Cerwin Vega parts.

EF86 on the front is rare. In our 7th iteration of SE EL84 (starting out by copying Decware ZEN) we used EF86 in triode. Do you need the gain from using it as a Pentode.

I have 3 pair of those Akai (in the Roberts guise).

Dave - I see you are from Victoria. One of the nicest places on the planet! Re: your circuit question, best reference answer may be found at this link see post #9 from the circuit and first build originator.

Since you have three pair, you may wish to convert one set. I'm pleased that I did. On mine, I omitted the volume control and headphone jack, otherwise followed the schematic. There's another thread exhibiting the build of materials and my layout should you have any interest.

EDIT - looking back I forgot Jack used 6V6 power tubes. Since I have way too many EL84's in stock I made the slight revisions to accommodate them. Jack advised I employ the original NEC EF86 and EL84s as they were direct offspring of either Amperex or Mullard and may even be relabeled OEM. He was right. The EF86s still have their original dampers.

Pretty standard stuff. We use 6x4 (EZ90) in a hybrid bridge, the bit about the quality of the OPTs was interesting.

Gets me a bit more excited about them. Since i have 6 i can match 2 left channels and 2 right channels together (the channels differ slightly). I will also have to refigure out the scheme that repurposed all the holes and develop a circuit to drive the meters.

I think i will drive EL84 (6П14П), if i can recover my stash of them. Probably use shotkys for the rectifier. All poly caps, and maybe a second choke.

Thanx for the poke.
