John Curl's Blowtorch preamplifier part IV

The transformer is loaded with the delay line LC's as well as the panels so several places and there may be some effort to decouple the secondary of the transformer to make the amplifier load more manageable. There are series resistors and a cap on the primary to protect amps from the crowbar if tripped.

Please reduce the bias Z to simulate leakage and test also.

Look at the top HF region.... ESL are known for their fast Tr and dont sound dull. See if you get same heavily rolled off HF as Stereophile shows. Which would sound dull.

I was wondering if their rolled off Hf end was due to low HV or leakage because of what i measured at our friend, R.Lees.

A common thread is that R.Lees and myself and here in Bangkok all are near the ocean with high humidity. Since having them in bangkok, the QUAD repair people here say cant use QUADs in high humidity. Seems to be a well known problem with QUADs ?? At least over here.

I recall the nylon formulation used for the film cover was hygroscopic by nature.

Whenever I have hi-pot problems due to room humidity, I will bag the item in plastic and push dry nitrogen gas into the bag. I would imagine this technique could actually be a good modification for existing ESL's as long as there is a film over the entire unit as was mentioned earlier.
After a day or so, virtually everything I bag loses all leakage due to moisture.

One of those nitrogen bottles costs 7 dollars, so I would expect it to be less than say, 30 to 50 dollars on the street. I imagine with a reasonable seal, a bottle could last for months.

And, be far less expensive than trying to drive room humidity down. Bagging can get RH down into the single digits trivially. The only thing I would recommend is to store the bottle OUTSIDE to eliminate the possibility of an oxygen deficiency hazard, and have two throttle mechanisms in series for redundancy.

Offhand, can't recall you responding critically when Syn08 made a totally dismissive post. Something else besides 'totally dismissive' bothering you?

Please point out exactly what you are talking about. Mr. Marsh's comment was very specific, a sarcastic laugh and dismissal of "99%" of all technical papers as worthless. Do you agree? Maybe you do but then why post links after reading nothing but an abstract with a few of the right words.

Perhaps there is a group of folks lashing out because they don't understand the technical underpinnings of what is going on.

I found that sequence particularly humerous. Stinius tries in vain to slap me upside the head immediately after I provide a working solution to combatting high humidity problems with high voltage structures with a simple dry nitrogen feed I started using with great success 25 years ago..

Oh, the theory behind a HV guard ring is this: by putting a very conductive trace around the film but not touching the film's actual electric surface, and connecting that trace to the HV, there will be no leakage current between the charge surface and the ring run as they are the same potential. Any currents from the ring to ground are of no consequence as long as the leakage can be supported by the supply. A micro amp from guard to ground would be unimportant, and the film is left alone. A nano amp across the charge surface otoh, produces a kilovolt per square potential drop, not good for music..

No, it was overstated for sure.

Speaking of sarcasm, Syn recently posted about sucking professors and being sucked by wannabes.

Much more disrespectful attempt at humor than what Richard said. How did you find Syn's sarcasm? If it was okay, then I guess Richard's might have been too.

Now THAT is a very good idea and solution. Thank you.

Just an observation. The "scientific" community went after Walt Jung also as soon as he crossed over into talking about hearing/detecting audible differences. Suddenly he was an outcast and ridiculed. A traitor. No longer was he a good designer... that did not matter anymore.

I find Walt and others here who both carefully listen to sounds and have engineering know-how and knowledge/experience to be the best for Audio development.

I dont have an engineering career to protect, as Walt did, so go ahead and complain all you like. I am successful, live a good life, help others and enjoy this hobby of making music repo sound more accurate thru science and thru listening.

At worst a slightly crass comment on the academic pecking order. You've been blinded by some kind of hate, you do remember I bought a Bybee device and opened it to find stuff someone could make on a kitchen table. You also know it came with quack medical claims which is heinous in any context.

It has been a while since I noticed that his criticisms were not due to objective technical reasons, but according to a system of personal antipathy that eludes me.
It is a pity that he does not put his knowledge at the service of more noble and more elegant causes and prefers to bark among the hyenas.
Disappointed, I stopped reading him. Courtesy comes first in my scale of values..

Stan Lipshitz... PHD Math... Canada. I recall listening for an hour him talking at AES about doing something this way or that way. he proved his way was superiur way. At the end of the talk was Q&A time and someone asked the question which was on all our minds. How much better was his approach. He guessed it made a ONE DB difference! The whole audience grumbled and got up and left. One DB. I will never forget that talk by the AES pres. Sorry. NOT impressed. Demonstrated Great mathematical acumen but to what end result?

If that isnt mental masterbation, I dont know what is.

Need more examples? ... there are reams of it published every year. OK, so i exaggerated. Maybe a little less than 99%. 🙂 So, I am skeptical.

You can't read what I said, AT THE TIME. I pointed out day one the DA stuff was mostly BS and you and JC ignored me.

yep. we did ignore you. And for the reason i gave and have gone into more detail here since then as well.

I dont recall having anything to sell regarding caps. I never sold caps. I got a patent with Bas Lim (REL Cap) which he used and paid me for sales of them for a few years. Now owned by Wilson Audio and used by JC still. Wilson now makes the money off them. I dont get any money for those either. And, with my blessing.
