Hi end audio is a limited activity. Most people get by with less. But like fancy sports cars, etc, it has enthusiastic supporters (not the people here, necessarily) and they are what I count on to appreciate better audio products.
Oops, you meant to type "Paul Klipsch"
Oops, you meant to type "Peter Walker"
Oops, you meant to type "John Linsley Hood"

Ray Dolby
David Blackmer
Of course they do. They work to separate suckers from their money, enrich a charlatan, and give John a mechanism to get attention.

Now there's an endorsement. And to think that I never heard the checkered demon utter the word "quantum" even once.
Most people know the name Thomas Edison 😀RNM,
I would say except for a few companies that use someone's name for marketing most people couldn't name one audio designer. But if you mention Mark Levinson some will know the name. But who would know who started Threshold or so many other audio companies by the designer's name, not many I would suspect.
Bose is what many people consider as quality audio but might not know it is even someone's name.

It doesn't stand for Buy Other Sound Equipment? They were showing pro gear at Infocomm. (Again....)
Tomlinson Holman
Erno Borberly
James Bongiorno
Paul McGowan
Malcolm Hawksford
Richard Burwen
Edward Cherry
Stanley Lipschitz
Marshall Leach
Richard Vandersteen
Dave Wilson
Andrew Jones
And now mention some that are still active designers and/or not deceased yet 😉
Stan Curtis
John Dawson
You guys are dating yourself royally!
Demian Martin
Eelco Grimm
Bruno Putzeys
Douglas Self
It seems that your lists are more influenced by past publicity campaigns than anything else!

Seems people seem to know the names of designers from their own country more than others.
Old timers? Herman Hosmer Scott (HH Scott), James B.Lansing, E.Fisher, D. Hafler, P. Klispch, H. Koss, E. Villchur, R Burwin, S. Marantz et al.... the ones we learned from. The first Generation. We are the second. Who are the up and coming 3rd gen audio designers?

Some hi-end prices are difficult to justify, but in the main the prices reflect the materials and development costs.
Dan.

I didn't mention Bruno because although he is possibly the most prolific audio designer who lets his name be known at the moment* as well as a great supporter of the hobbyists. He is sort of in a group of one.
*I am sure there are people on here who have 'birthed' more products, but whose names are not mentioned in any magazines.

Possibly Bruno is also the odd man out as he seems equally proficient in DACs, speakers, power amps, phono pre's etc.
That is also quite unusual - most designers have their own area they specialize in.

Jan, I was going to argue with you as there are others in the old guard who have made a successful jump to digital such as Bob Stuart, Mike Moffat etc but then realised none of them have actually designed a DAC from first principles. (happy to be corrected if Mike has).
But he's only hot stuff on a couple of forums and 6 loons. Not sure his stuff is even sold in europe. Even in the 0.1% of the population who read audio mags he's not well known. You clearly hang out on certain forums and read certain web publications so think he is well known. I think you are mistaken. but the average punter will go 'rossi', what the bike racer? (or worse 'wasn't he in status quo?') 🙂
I think JC deserves to be treated with respect, certainly by nincompoops. According to you own posts, you even run behind putting some 3886 kit together. This just to mark the evolutionary step you yourself occupy.
The fact that you are allowed on the same site as people who have made, and still are making, genuine contributions to audio reproduction, does not give you the right to insult them.

I reserve the right to quote this partially, out of context and at the most inopportune time. 🙂

Oorah !
(I believe Crazy Bill was referring to Red Vinnie)

He wasn't talking about John. I suspect an apology is in order.

.
They are right I was talking about Vinnie. The fact that I have a full time job and 5 kids, one under the age of one limits the time I have to work on stuff. Not aware that having a busy life marks me as a neanderthal.
Edit: As I have said before I am on record as saying if I could afford JCs parasound designs I would never bother looking for upgrades. He designs good stuff. Not arguing with that.
