Branding. The Japanese are big into it. I think the conclusions they drew were probably correct. I mean, if Porche came out with a $20k car would you buy it? Hell no, it would be beneath you wouldn't it? 😀

We even have a TV ad with that theme. Good looking, clearly affluent couple does a test drive in a Dacia Duster (an eastern European brand taken over by VW I think). At the end they are very enthousisatic, and want to order the car. BTW what's the price? € 13,999. Says the couple: "This is soooo not us'🙄

If memory serves, they did something like that, basically a VW motor placed as a mid-engine in a cheap frame. I think they actually did sell a bunch of them.

The 914; we called them the Volksporsche. Actually a very good car, excellent handling, great looks.

On the other hand, my former mortgage/financial advisor drove an AMG.
Oh sorry, I meant to say he drove an E-series, with the AMG styling package.

(Which was good foresight, considering that his conglomerate of corporate registrations & activities got fined >>€1M a couple of years later, for over-creative entrepeneuring. No skin off my back, fortunately, even made some)

Not smart to try to position oneself in two opposing markets, be it audio, automobiles, or anything else. Plenty historic examples.
In the late '70s, Technics would have been smarter to set up an Infinity/Lexus brand for the pretty stuff.

A late friend had a 914-6. I can attest that it was quite a car, although I never asked to drive it. He eventually fell behind on payments and it was repossessed.

Prior to that it held up in a sort-of road race from LA to Seattle, as he and g/f strove to get to a Buddhist convention. He alleges they made it in 14 hours, which entails >100 mph speeds for much of the mileage, while slowing down to go through towns and speed traps.

Porsche-VW once tried to make an 'affordable' Porsche like sports car, and the 914 and the 924 were made. Both were Porsche-VW, and one friend had a 914 that he had modified, and it was almost scary fun! I owned a Porsche 924, and I really liked driving it 'hard'. Yes, it had a VW engine, that both Porsche and I tried to modify, but it was still a Porsche in handling.
Those of you who do not know why we refer to cars when comparing autos, probably were not raised rebuilding them and knowing the trade-offs in autos as intimately as many Americans. I started working on cars almost 60 years ago, and 55 years ago, I started hopping up my 54 Chevy with dual carbs and dual exhausts, etc. I didn't do very well, but at least I LEARNED. Also, because of the lack of extremely high taxes on autos and gasoline in the USA, we could 'afford' to try sports cars, that might not have even been sold in their country of origin, and modify them as we became employed in industry, and had a little extra money. This gave us some extra understanding of auto tradeoffs, and sometimes they can be compared to audio tradeoffs.
I have always used these comparisons between auto and audio to gain more understanding, not to confuse the situation. Sorry that some here had no idea what I was trying to do.

The best amp designer at GrooveTubes did basically same "hopping up" not on cars but on guns. I think it is safe to say that many americans do a lot of things with guns that parallel the american obsession with cars. Yet, I don't come across much talk about guns on audio forums, Interesting. Come to think of it, not much about boats or telescopes either. Hmmmm stereos and cars? At least I haven't seen this thread meander to fine wine and cigars

At engineering-u, quite some time is spent on systems engineering, control theory, policy analysis classes.
Those with a management itch continue with stuff like operations research and the likes.

Even for Deming & Juran, guess what the ever returning main theme was.
(and it has little to do with obsession)

You mean we still haven't outgrown Deming Circles? Amazing!
They were all the fashion when I did QA at Dutch Air Force contractors longer ago than I care to admit!

Our cars are stone stock- they do a fine job of getting us from point A to point B. Likewise, our guns are stone stock and do a fine job of allowing a slug or pellets to get from our hands to the target. I suppose that if I used a silver barrel and demagnetized powder, then used a green marker to put a line around the magazine, the slug would make a more meaningful impact on the target.

that defaults to cars on audio forums.

And within the subset of cars (using cars as a generic term) I have yet to see Monster Trucks, and the like, ever mentioned. Yet those are masterful engineering efforts too. Hmmm, maybe those are not seen as not having cooth in these here parts.

.........Carry on, I just find it interesting.

We had a brief detour through wines a while back Robert. It occasioned some protests as well. No cigars as yet that I noticed. As well, since that smoke plates out on things audio.

Dan tells me the preamp got a good review. What magazine?
