I just bought this MP3 USB Flash Drive Micro SD TF Card Player Decoding Amplifier Board Module USA | eBay for another project -
You provide +5V. It plays mp3s from SD or USB stick. 3.5 mm stereo wired output. $5, shipped.
My application is a mono pink noise source, for testing speakers. It has both stereo (headphone) and mono (speaker) outputs. We'll see if it works after it arrives.

Sounds like a good deal.
For Mike I don't see anyway to go but a dedicated MP3 player or a rechargeable Bluetooth receiver that can be plugged into the jobsite boombox or radio. Tons of those on Amazon and eBay.
I have one of these coming today.

That's the exact electronic solution to Mike's requirement as per his original post - and similar to the Velleman module to which I linked earlier.
Unfortunately, it's not a 'plug & play' solution for outdoor use due to the lack of a protective enclosure. Still, it's well worth considering if Mike is up to a little DIY!
I know it isn't DIY, but - https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/mp3-players/sandisk-clip-jam#SDMX26-008G-G46B

I got the little battery powered Bluetooth receiver and it works well. It paired very fast - faster than any Bluetooth device I've used before. Sounds nice and has a good output level. I don't plan to use it on battery power, but the battery is supposed to last 10 hours.
Seems like this would be ideal for getting streaming audio out of a phone into a boombox at work.

Chiming back in. I gave up on trying to figure out how to connect my flash drive to the jobsite radio and ended up buying a cheap MP3 player with Bluetooth, as suggested a couple times above. I ripped all my music to it (what a chore!) and paired it up with the radio...all is good now.
Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback, everyone!

It works! I power it with +5 from one of those battery powered cell phone chargers. As soon as it receives power, starts playing the pink noise file on the micro SD card. Now, onto the project! (In a separate post)
