That’s what’s strange, I had been using a MUR1620 with a bad section (only one good diode) for testing and that worked. I just bent the leg for the bad diode out of the way, so it wasn’t connected. So I put a brand new one in and it fried. Not sure what to make of that. With a single diode it came online like a champ and I was actually able to null out the speaker terminals with the offset pot.
The 1620 isn't rated for enough voltage. If you have a scope, look at the voltage that feeds the rectifier. It's much greater than the rail voltage.

I thought that I saw the 1606 as a 600v as well but the datasheet I have here says 400. Did you probe the input to the rectifier to see the actual swing of the transformer output?Remember that it has to withstand the entire peak -peak voltage.
