Jensen vs Mundorf

Don't waste your money on wax capacitors. There was a recent post about some Jupiter wax capacitors failing. Wax is not a hermetic seal and moisture will eventually get inside.

How recent?

The first gen of Jupiters were truly horrible, both because they melted if you looked at them the wrong way and because, at least to my ears, they sounded intolerably coloured. It seems current production is a lot better in all respects.

Do they? Haven't bought Mundorfs in a while but at the time compared the oil filled S&G against the dry and by a significant margin preferred the dry variety.

Perhaps i am the only one with this preference but then again i also hate teflon 😀

It appears that indeed the least expensive variety have no oil. I stand corrected! And I would seriously consider those too!!!

😀

Think I would approach it like this:
  1. Determine size of current capacitors (this is probably the max. size you can implement)
  2. Determine the required voltage (400V – 450V?)
  3. Determine which sound flavor you prefer? (oil is a bit more mellow, sliver a bit more clear, Teflon is refined, are you are bass freak etc., this is quite personal as you also see in the reviews and the discussions on this forum)
  4. Determine which amount of money you are prepared to pay?
  5. Are you open to a strategy by taking one / several cheaper like MKPs and parallel one small but "superior" capacitor (e.g. Teflon, most expensive Mundorf)
So a lot of questions to come to your choice! But not something one can decide for you I think. Hope this works / helps 🙂

I am not against subjectivism, but tests must be done properly.

Just to come back to this. He says that himself right "The subjective results of this test are meant to give you a general idea of the audible differences between capacitors when used in passive loudspeaker crossovers. The capacitors are tested in many different loudspeakers, varying from the ones I happen to be building at the time, to the many other speakers I have."

So I think crud is a bit too harsh since I really appreciate someone taking all that trouble. Even if he is a bit commercial 😉.
