I just noticed that there are ready-made JBL ported Subwoofers in Sonotubes. They claim a frequency response from 35Hz - 200 Hz. Sensitivity is 90db. Price is very reasonable for everything put together.
It just set me wondering if buying one of these, blocking the port and using a baffle to reduce the enclosure volume would result in a good sub for music and HT when ELF compensated? Ofcourse, the max spl would come down but low frequency can be extended into the mid-20s and the sub would sound faster.
Has anyone played with such an idea and is it worth pursuing at all? Thanks everyone.

You can often find out which driver they've used in each cabinet.
Find out which driver, plug the numbers into WinISD, and play around - you can add all sorts of filters and eq.
I would say that, because the enclosure is so small anyway, blocking the port would improve the sound, and you wouldn't need to reduce the cabinet volume.

Faster ?
eh.
I saw where someone took a 4 peerless drivers (in a too small box) and eq'd them flat. He preferred a single driver with a passive radiator.
The reduction in cone motion (ported or passive radiator) trumped 4 times the cone area.
When I stuffed my 27hz tuned 15's, it is no quicker or cleaner.
It just sounds like 6db less bass.

You get far less group delay with sealed enclosures. So they typically sound 'faster' as long as you put the right filters on them to flatten it out.
The downside is that they are far less efficient.
