greetings all-found a pair of jbl lancer 77's on a junk pile. surrounds partially fried- one tweeter not working. they work at mid volume with 100w. / ch receiver.
would like to re-surround and use woofers for mid bass in a 3 or 4-way sound reinforcement system with radian 1 or 2 inch comp. drivers and 15" subs. drum machine ? soft synth drums/ yamaha s-80 drums and bass, as well as 5 string bass will primarilly be played through this. 2 marantz ma-500 amps for the highs-- they put out 125w. rms @ 8 ohms.
the le10 woofers rated at 60w, the radians at 30w and 50w respectively. will the marantz drive both the le10 and comp horn with clarity?
should i only drive the horn w/ the marantz.
how would the le10's sound between say 100 or 80 hz up to 800 or 1.2khz?
originally wanted to use ciare 10" for mid bass - but-- i'm an old guy that hasn't gigged steady for 20 years and i want some reall hi-fi canned bass and drums!! have a couple 15" eminence that nail the pipe organ thing if need- realair movers. think meyer sound lab-- ha ha ha
but really, that is my benchmark-
grateful dead late/mid 80's>dan healy>ultra sound> meyer sound lab> eargasm!!!
thanks!

The LE10 is a very nice woofer with a long gap, short coil configuration. This is an expensive way to build a woofer and generally gives very nice low distortion character. The tweeter is okay but not special.
Its up to you whether you want to restore or hot rod, but the system does have some collector value so reversible changes might be smart.

after spending about 10 hours poking around on this site since i signed up yesterday i realize i'm a dilitante- it's very humbling. my passion is for loudspeaker design and building and i realize now i'm just a hick- a novice and it's embarasing. started reading allied and heathkit and laffayette catalogues 45 years ago and have gone through many "component systems" as we said do long ago- then i got real distracted and became a musician and-
WHERE DO I START? i've read bad reviews of the loudspeaker cookbook-
i want to go deep but i want to ground myself in the basics with haveing to have a phd in electrical engineering-
any suggestions for home schooling in high fidelity especially loudspeaker design and building. i can remember 50 years ago the thrill i got from opening up a speaker enclosure to see the size of the magnet- i don't know why- but i still get a rush from it. a year ago, i found a pair of jbl lanccer 77"s that were thrown on a junk pile- they work fine at mid volume- and they have incredible midrange presence. listening to familiar music i hear things i never heard on my jbl northwood 8"-
been using the lancers to hold up a table top because the surrounds are shot- finally took one of the woofers out and whammo!!the rush! jbl quotes both 6 and 6 1/2 pound magnet- pretty cool for a 9" short coil long throw- not very efficient but amazing clarity. one of the tweeters is fried- tempted to add a faital or radian comp / horn or even bullet tweeter-
i've got the bug- WHERE DO I START!!!!
THANK YOU 🙂🙂
