JBL L80 Caprice - any information?

I found a picture of this loudspeaker. From what I could find, it uses two LE8 speakers and two passive radiators. The metal ball in the middle is used fir what? I like the looks of it, I might try to build something similar for my Sonido 8" full rangers. All I could find online is a manual, but there is only very little information. Anyone ever owned these?

I think it was there to be able to tilt the enclosures in an easy way.
