Like so many I have been devising ways to fill in the irritating gap between 300-500 on Khorns. I already had the EV DH1a and was heading down the JBL 2360 path, when a couple Altec 1003b's came my way also. Literally, I need to decide today.
So my question is which way should I go?
- the 1003b has a 1.4" throat, so would have to remove the EV "Snout"
- no, i am not going to pursue some 288/290 drivers for the 1003b's. If that is what's necesssary to use the 1003b's, then the idea is dead and I'm going the JBL way
Ideas?

Given your binary choice, I'd probably go Altec 1003b for their loading below 500 Hz compared to the JBL 2360.
Given a choice between either of the above and a paper cone driven horn low mid (if I didn't have to build it ;^) ), I'd go with the cone.

Sad update
So i looked at to 1003b’s last nite and decided they were just a little too beat up to fit into a domestic/WAF approved space. Believe it or not, my wife would have alowed them in the family room!, she is a gem! It was a very hard decision, but i said “no” because i knew it would be soething she “tollerated”, not “liked”.
So, moving on... if i was considering a cone driver (on a short horn?) tell me more about how you would do it? What part of the khorn tophat would you retain? Do you like volvotreter’s mid bass horns?
Or?

Volvotreter’s mid bass horns seem fine, but I would be more partial to a multiple entry horn to provide a virtual point source rather than separate mid and high horns.
A simple one or two part multiple entry conical horn designed for dispersion appropriate to your listening space using the EVDH1A (snout removed) for highs and anything from a pair of 6" to 10" mid drivers would allow a crossover point from around 80 to 200 Hz.
If you are not already familiar with multiple entry horns, this thread could be an introduction:
SynTripP: 2-way 2-part Virtual Single Point Source Horn
Not likely much of the Khorn "top hat" would be useful for re-use as a multiple entry horn other than the lumber and grille frame.

I had the pleasure of living with one Klipschorn bass utility model for almost 50 years. Absolutely the most wonderful large rooming-filling bass, even if it needs a sub-woofer for lowest 8/ave.
One is all you need (mixed bass is fine) and you can decorate it any way you want and you can put your wine rack on top in a corner. Any low crossover freq needs an active crossover, of course.
As far as anything north of maybe 150 Hz, I'd sure start elsewhere but horns, at least for classical music listening.
