Just replaced my Sennheiser G2 EW135s with G3 EW165s. Use them for a Southern Gospel Band, have 5 total. They are attached to an Allen/Heath Mixwiz 16:2 mixer, plugged into the XLR Mic In channels. I've played with the Sensitivity settings on the Mic/Transmitter as well as the AFOut settings on the Receivers. Currently the Mic Sensitivity is set at -30 and the AFout on the Receiver is at -24. Did this based on Sennheiser tech support recommendations. While at those settings, sound is clear/crisp and no feedback/high pitch hiss on 'ssss' sounds until i really push the output from the mixer (high gains on mic channles and above 0 on the channel strips and mains), BUT, i get hardly any signal light on my channel strips? I typically watch the signal meters on the channel strip when mixing audio for other bands that i dont' recoginze each vocal, so i keep my eye on the greenlight signal indicator on each channel and adjust accordingly. If i change the AFout settings on receiver or the sensitivity setting on the mic to where i get signal light on my channel strip on mixer, then i can't turn up the volume at all or i get feedback/high pitch noise, ESPECIALLY on words that end in 'SSS'... if i just make a 'sssssss' sound into the mic, it tails of with a high pitch annoying noise out of the speaker? Does any of that make sense? I have the 865 capsule on the mics. ANy help/suggestions would be appreciated. Monitors are powered EV ZLX 15".
That sounds almost like sibilance and then instability. Try reducing the treble and start with the eq set to centre.
this might be off track but are you using the built in effects?
before setting gains for new mic's i'd blank the previous mix (reset channel EQ as well as all aux/monitor/effects sends) i've been caught by overlooking routing.
are you familiar with compressor limiters that have de esser functions or using the side chain on a DBX 266 or the like to give you a frequency sensitive limiter or pre limit specific feed bands?
and do tell what are you running for f.o.h. speakers and monitors?
