Is This Worth It ... ?

First post... I've gone down the rabbit hole for a couple of weeks and I'm not getting very far (eyroll)

I borrowed a cheap subwoofer from a friend and managed to very quickly kill it dead (the amplifier hum of death)
https://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Sound-...rs/18-Active-DJ-PA-Subwoofers-2000W-Pair.html

I am wondering if I can de-activate it (scrap the amplifier) and throw a monster cone into it as a consolidatation.
Something like one of these --->

"Ideal for two-way top boxes, full-range two-way boxes, bass guitar boxes, and small subwoofers"

I downloaded WinISD Pro (Alpha) but for some reason it won't accept my numbers and throws an error box.
(Screenshot attached)
I am about to download Hornresp now and see if that fares any better.

Internal dimensions of the box are 610 x 520 x 375
This gives a net volume of 118.95 litres.
Minus 6.70 litres for an Impero 18C, .506 litres of brace and two ports (95mm dia. x 110mm deep) .77 litres each,
giving a combined port volume of just over a litre and a half (1.54l)
Approxamite box volume 110.004 litres

Any help appreciated.... Going back down the rabbit hole.

Thank you very much for your input, you gave me a few very valuable pointers there (thumbs up)

Okay, I got into WinISD and a night of reading after your posts and I think I might have some solutions.
First off, there is no way that crappy box is getting 2400w, I think maybe 1000w is a bit more realistic.

This improves things greatly.

If I change the port dimensions to 110mm diameter WinISD specifies a port length of 200mm and a port velocity
of almost 35 m/s.
The same parameters adjusted for 120mm diameter round port gives 246.5mm port length and velocity is at 29m/s.
Still a bit high...

How about two larger cut-out right angled triangles instead of round ports.... If I input 1 box port @ 180mm x 180mm
this is technically the surface area of two 180mm x 180mm x 250mm right angled triangles.
Does it work like this, I don't think triangular ports are compatable with WinISD but if it does work, vent length is 330mm
and port velocity is a hair over 20m/s.
That would be perfect I suppose, I could live with that..

Something similar to the design attached below --->

The usual questions:
  • Budget?
  • Do you have an amplifier? If so, how much power?
  • Do you have any signal processing?

IMO, the Eminence driver you're looking at could be bettered by others. I use a few Faital 18XL1800 in my PA, which have an Xmax of 20mm. ie, in the excursion-limited range, they'd match 2.5 of those Eminence drivers.

Output density (dB/L) is where high-end drivers really shine.

Don't sweat it too much... that thing is complete junk.

Yes on using an external amplifier but don't put a different driver in it, the cheap particle board box will just fall apart. The Impero requires a fairly large box to perform decently well as a subwoofer but the box you have as only 4 cu ft, so this combo would not be a great. If you are going to spend money use it on an amplifier.. something that does 500w willl perform about the same as the original plate amp.

You're welcome!

Round is most efficient, so triangular will require longer ones for a given tuning and not supported by any freeware I'm aware of except possibly the old AkaBak.
