In light of the fact that I'm struggling with the triode/UL and CFB wiring I thought I'd go for a relatively cheap and simple upgrade and install a motor run capacitor.
I came across this on eBay - any of you wise sages know if it's fit for purpose as the supplemental capacitor in the SSE?

Looks good, interesting all the uk versions are cabled. Heres what we use on the other side of the pond:

I haven't noticed a huge change in sound with the cap; bass seems tighter though, perhaps a bit more 'space' between the different instruments too.
Just came across a post from Ty_Bower from last year that illustrates the CFB wiring so I'll have a go at that this afternoon....

That is the main benefit, although the results depend on your speakers and musical tastes. Sharp transients should improve too. Anything that asks for a quick shot of energy from the power supply should benefit from the synergy of the two different caps.

If you want to pick your own, the requirments are 500 volts or more, and 200ma or more. Then its how much cash you want to spend on henry, and he's not a cheap date.
On an untested note, edcor sells them too, just call to check voltage limit.

What choke is used for the SSE? I didn't see it in the parts list.
I think a lot of people use the RDC-100, but I have the edcor CXC100-5H-200mA on my SSE and it works fine (albeit at 4X the cost)...
I'm using the Hammond 193J also. It's not specified on the parts list as it's an 'optional' part i.e. don't need it to make the amp work, just make sure you've got R1 installed instead, if not using choke.
After a few days with the supplemental motor run cap I can say it was £15 very well spent. I'm running the baby Edcors and my only (small) gripe was that the bass could be a bit woolly, or soft, lacking in punch. Motor run cap fixes that and now the bass is tight and more precise.
Wish I had more success with the CFB and UL wiring. I tried to follow Ty_Bower's wiring pictures but all it does is cancel any sound at all coming from that channel. I'm doing something wrong but am more than happy to live a triode life for the time being!

Just for pure academics. In a perfect world with a 100,000 cap coupled power supply and class A, the choke would do almost nothing, since current would never change. A resistor would get the same result if it had the same resistance.
A choke coupled transformer needs a huge choke to handle the massive current changes ( or they growl). However George's amp is cap coupled. So what he recommends is what is needed, just enough current to handle the load. The motor run cap after the choke drastically cap decouples the power supply, so the transients are handled by the super low esr cap, instead sucking a current swing through a 150ohm resistor or choke before it gets to the ps cap.
