Is this cartridge snake oil ?

It's OK to admit you are wrong. Consider a bass loudspeaker flapping about uncontrollably in Air. Big excursion yes?

Now give it the same signal, but immersed in water. It won't move much, will it? Because it is more mechanically loaded. The same goes for electrical loading. The harder it has to push, the less it moves. Simple.

Well, this is almost the battle of Brittain, but I'm afraid it will be hard to beat Bill. :D

Which has been shown several ways, both by calculating the efficiency of the generator (by LD) and George putting 5V across a MM cartridge.

Slack and unscientific assertion. What was the 5V? DC or AC, and if AC, what frequency? Do we know the person testing had any idea what he was looking for? People often measure the wrong thing. And you provide no references. So I am stuck.

This is a complex interaction of mechanical and electrical compliance in a phono cartridge. But your ideas defy Conservation of Energy unless I have misunderstood something. Efficiency with transducers is often frequency dependent.

Specialist subjects, Group delay in filters, FFT, 3D Spatial Fourier transform. Telecoms system engineer by employ. Wherein you were more interested how system components interacted, and what could go wrong, rather than the nuts and bolts of the components.

Why did the Decca ffss cartridge have THREE coils and three wires rather than two coils and 4 wires? One for the mono signal and one each for left and right. Could be something interesting there IMO.
 
Mate, I can't remember all of it either. But definitely 3 coils, eh?

The configuration 3 coils made it necessary to derive the stereo signal by adding and subtracting the signals. Even then the minute changes induced by both the horizontal and vertical movements of the iron part deliver a strong signal due to the large coils and strong magnets.
In order to keep the diamond tip in place (so it could not move forward) a tie back cord (garrote) is used.

On the DL-103 that's not an itch I am interested in scratching (had one sold it before listening to it) and I am intrigued why some consider adding huge mass is a benefit, but for those who do the Paradox kits (ebay user paradoxtar) seem a good starting point. Machined from solid and under $100.
 
Because a lot of the implementation is the same, billshurv.

We were listening to the Decca ffss on a 12" Goodmans and 4" Goodmans conetweeter, so not enough top end to be shrill I suspect.

But a lovely sound on good live recordings.

"The Strawbs live at the Queen Elisabeth Hall" was as good as being there. TBH, I have heard much newer low-ouput MC cartridges, and they were stunning too.

I am always interested in useful ideas. That Decca might be a sort of 3 phase power idea. No return Earth currents. I don't know. But filed away for future thought. :)

Press with your thump some goop (plasticine) around the DL-103 flimsy plastic body and headshell lower side.
Rebalance your arm after adding that extra weight and then set the tracking weight to it’s high setting for that cartridge.

Likely a side effect of the added mass damping out some resonances. The Korf link I mentioned earlier has some interesting measurements of the effects of simple spacers, and headshells. They generally align with what I hear.

And yes, goop, blu tac, and other damping material work too, depending on the offender and offended. Been there.

Nope, the Decca is designed to resolve vertical and lateral movements ONLY, instead of the conventional 2 x 45°. See here.
IMHO, the interest is contained: I've got one somewhere, haven't fired it up for nearly half a century.


The Decca are too rich for me, but i did get an MC20 modified for mid side replay for a play. Only used it for mono playback so far so no conclusions
 
@Zung: I think that is a tiny part of it, but I think its more person A says its good so everyone follows suit. If I'd kept the 103 I'd have run it naked.

That's what I'd do if only I had faith in these old hands. :(

But remember that "conservation of energy" thingy from high school: the vibrations will happily travel along the mechanical path and hit anything that can resonate until somehow they're turned into heat.

The problem is there's not systematic process I know to fix this, only the normal engineering procedure: fix A, break B; fix B, break C. That's why "person A"'s fix may not be applicable to person B.
 
Because I thought it was a high output MC! But you are quite right, it must be a moving magnet or something similar.

I remember seeing a diagram of how the coils are connected electrically. It was a triangular sort of arrangement, mixing left, right and what you would think is a mono signal. maybe reducing the stereo width, but I don't know. It was a long time ago.

Sort of low-compliance cartridge that needed a carefully matched and heavyish arm to stay in the groove well.
 
Fixed magnets, fixed coils, moving iron armature. I don't know how the inductance compares to other MM/MI carts. We had a Decca London Gold with a van den Hul stylus in a stereo show I worked in a very long time ago. It was very fussy to set up right, but sounded very good once it was done. Ridiculous mounting arrangement, leaving it kind of hanging out in space. As someone else pointed out, the coils are arranged to read lateral and vertical movement (I can't remember which got two coils), and stereo is extracted through a sum-and-difference arrangement. Yes, it has been a very long time for me, too.

As there are no specific answers to my concerns (external parallel load to PJ's MM input to achieve a total impedance of approximately 400 Ohms) I think my terrible English played a "trick on me" and I may have offended someone in this thread .... sorry if it was like that ...
