as per the thread title, I'd like to be able to run the sound system with the engine off for hours at a time, without a bank of batteries.
I reckon im asking too much. what I've been looking at is an alpine pmx 320 , I think is the model number, and just run 4, 4 ohm speakers in parallel.
Alpine - PMX Amplifiers - PMX-T320
The alpine pdx amps are supposed to be more efficient, but, they are bigger amps and prob more power hungry. Ive been looking around and JBL seem to be making efforts in this direction also, but, they are very expensive amps. they arent available to buy used, whereas the alpines are.
I'd like to run little tripath amps, they supply enough power, but, ive had problems with engine feedback from them when i tried it before. I suppose i could just dig up some info on noise suppression.
thanks for listening to me waffling.
cheers,
ned .

Class D amps are quite efficient, up to 90%
Class AB is around 60% efficient and dumps 40% of power into the heatsink.

Class D amplifiers are very efficient as stated previously. Howevever, if you are running very low resistance as you said (1 ohm), you are drawing more current and not allowing the amplifier to run at it's highest efficiency.
There are tiny Class D amplifiers available now. Utilizing more efficient, higher sensitivity speakers would draw less power as well.

41Hz Audio makes a 4-channel Tripath amp kit designed to run off car voltages.

I've considered installing switches so that I could run T-amps while parked, and regular amps when driving. The T-amp boards are tiny, and the cost is negligible (they're now under $6 shipped on eBay). The hard part is finding a switch which will handle speaker levels, and have at least 12 poles (4 speakers, two subwoofer voice coils). It has crossed my mind to use plugs instead: Neutrik Speakons, Alcatel EP, or Jones. That would also make it easy to hook up external PA speakers.
