I bought that cheap HPS ballast kit from the ebay vendor to find out you can buy a S400DD retrofit bulb for it. Is there any other bulb that will work for it? Any possible way I can use this ballast without getting a S400DD bulb?
sure
You can buy any standard 400 Watt High Pressure Sodium lamp (pretty cheap). Hook them together and use it for an outdoor security lamp. It will be just like you are at the mall parking lot. 😀

i believe there is another company who makes a retrofit with the exact same specs as the ushio if the fact that the ushio is out of stock is your problem...
I've been carrying on an email exchange with Atlantalightbulbs.com. According to them, there's an alternate bulb made by Litetronics. I don't have the model number or the specs yet, but it's a start.
The Ushio bulbs are back-ordered with them till mid-April. Yeesh.

Poked around online, and I think I know what bulb they're talking about. Im posting a comparison here.
Ushio S400DD (Stats from lumenlab.com)
* 33,000 lumens
* 5200K color temp
* 85 CRI
* 27mm arc gap
* ANSI S51
* 20,000 hour life
Litetronics L-651(Stats from litetronics.com)
* 36,500 lumens
* 5000K color temp
* 65 CRI
* ? arc gap
* ANSI S51
* 10,000 Hour Life
Less than perfect, and I don't know the arc gap, but better than buying yet another ballast. If this bulb can last me until a new shipment of Ushio bulbs comes in, than I think it counts as an adequate solution. Any thoughts?

I'm getting it for the cost of the Ushio, as atlantalightbulbs.com is sending it in place of the Ushio. I don't know how much they normally charge for it, as it's not in their online catalog (or I can't find it). I've asked them where it is in their catalog, along with any info they can give me on model number, etc.
Best guess? Try emailing them and ask for alternatives to the Ushio bulb, they might be more forthcoming to someone who hasn't sent them a dozen emails.

The outer glass on that litetronics bulb looks like it's going to be huge. If the arc length is reasonable that might be a decent substitute bulb though.
T15 Envelope size?
Actually, they don't have a picture of the bulb up on Litetronics. I found my stats on http://www.litetronics.com/lite21.html. Given the numbers, and the intended purpose, there's only one bulb on that page which matches the description being given by Atlantalightbulbs.com, and that's the L-651. The photos at the top of the page appear to be for the first section, as other sections have bulb pictures as well. The section containing the L-651 has all the bulbs labeled as T15, which I recall (incorrectly?) as being the form-factor for the Ushio bulbs.
Of course, I am just guessing, and could be completely wrong. I decided to go ahead with the order, so I'll be able to post more information once it arrives.

You're right, I was mistaken. It does say T15 and that is the same form-factor for the Ushio. So it should be roughtly 2" in diameter. Now it's just a question of arc length, but I'd wager it will be similar to the Ushio in that regard too.
so far its brighter ... and roughly the same size ... but with half the life span ... for the same price ... arch length unknown hmm
dont sound to bad so far
