I have a Bedini 66 preamp which has 6 NE5534N opamps. Is there a more updated or better sounding one in can put in? This is more than 30 years old and I'm thinking there must have been improvements in that time.

If the 5534s have been properly implemented you will not be able to reliably identify them in a blind test next to a state of the art op amp. There are many good reasons they are still being used today.
I agree with the above post. The NE5534 is still good.
You wouldn't have many options anyway since they are socketed and the layout appears to be questionable for a high speed op-amp. Most of the "better" alternatives don't come in DIP packages and are fast enough that they may not be stable if placed into a circuit designed for a 5534. The LME49710 is the closest thing to a modern replacement you could have tried, but it's discontinued; only the dual version lives on.

djn, would you by any chance have a circuit diagram of the '66. I have a Bedini 25.25 and would really like to build a '66 to go with it.
